Is the SHO AC Compressor the kind that commits suicide?

I heard that compressors act one of two ways when the freon gets low.

1. Some type of clutch is activated so that the Compressor does not self destruct.

2. The poor compressor keeps spinning itself on the low freon until it dies.

Anyone know which type our Nippodenso(?) is?

The low pressure switch is supposed to disable the ac clutch. The compressor in my 92 lasted for 245,000 miles. That's with a couple of recharges.

Are you killing it or is it doing it all by itself?

If the clutch is still engaging it after you know it has no freon in it......pull out the clutch, right below the alternator, kind of scrapes your hand when you reach in there.....and make sure it is not hot. :madflame:

If the compressor is still engaging with a low refrigerant charge the low pressure switch is shorted. Disconnect the connection at the low pressure switch. It is near the accumulator/dryer near the battery. rangerj
