My intermittent wiper section does not work. If I put the selection on one of those settings it will work but stop halfway on the way up and stay there for a second and then move to the top and do the same thing. If I put it where the wipers are constantly on it works fine. What can I do to fix this?

You can disassemble and clean the head of the wiper stalk or you can spend the big $$$ (about $70 with tax) and replace the whole multifunction switch.

To remove the head, use a small, flat tipped screwdriver and gently pry the cap off the tip of the stalk. Now remove the Phillips head screw. You can then pull out the rotating assembly, but you must be very careful to capture the spring with brass caps on both ends that passes diametrically through the head. Those caps are electrical contacts and are essential to a properly working wiper switch.

With the barrel removed, you can use a Q-tip soaked with electrical contact cleaner to clean the contacts of the grease. When the old grease is cleaned out, you can then apply new dielectric grease to the contacts and reinstall the springs and caps into the rotating head and the head assembly into the barrel. You will have to use your fingers to compress the spring to allow installation of the barrel into the stalk. It should be as good as new.

I took it apart and cleaned it today. I used rubbing alcohol to clean it and put some dilectric grease on the contacts. It helped a little bit but it is doing the same thing. When I took it apart the grease was orange in color and it was real nasty. Everything was covered in this orangish grease. I'm wondering if maybe I take it apart again and clean it with electrical cleaner that it might make a difference. Everything was really dirty and I'm sure I didn't get all of it cleaned up.

dragging up an ANCIENT post... :nut: just cause i followed these instructions up until the part where you undo the screw. ....i don't have a screw under the cap. :oogle: is there a reason there doesn't appear to be ANY way an '89's stalk is not able to be disassembled? there is nothing in there that would allow anything to be removed.
