While under the car at work we discovered a tranny cooler between the radiater and the regular tranny cooler. I didn't know it was there but I've never really inspected that area and I've never had the underpinning off. Here are two pics I took.

2011 06 24 18 52 45 903

Is this an aftermarket cooler or are we mistaken by something else?

Gen3's come with a factory tranny cooler that is really small (tube style) but that is an aftermarket tranny cooler.

That's what we thought it was. The factory cooler is still there you can see part of it in the second pic...its stupidly small. Would it still be benificial to swap the gen3 cooler for the gen2 or is this a sufficent setup?

Should I bypass the aftermarket one that's been put on behind the stock one? Or just replace the gen 3 for the gen 2 and use the aftermarket one as well

^ Delete that one. That is a cheaper aftermaket cooler. If you really want to keep an eye on your tranny temps install a gauge with a quality aftermarket cooler and a fan on the cooler on a switch in the car.

If you want to keep it simpler just use a GEN 2 tranny cooler instead of the one (or 2) you have currently. They do a fair job.

Just the gen2 cooler wont be enough for the job; If I were you I would remove the aftermarket cooler you have and put a gen2 cooler in series with the factory cooler; thats how I have it and been running like that for the past 110k miles and my tranny still running like a top. (Factory tranny with almost 208k)

So basicly where the aftermarket one is, is where I need to put the gen 2 cooler or should it be vise versa?

Looks isn't the issue as they are in a spot you really can't see. And the gen2 cooler is larger than that aftermarket one and hence provides betters cooling.

The gen2 cooler I'm. Not sure if it does hold more fluid but I think the added size would cool better. As far as the fluid when my donut blew the other day and sliced my upper tranny line that runs to the cooler. Pretty much all the fluid drained out. And I'm sure when they replaced the fluid they removed the rest and then refilled. But probly not. Either way a new filter and gasket is on my list of things to do when money is right and hopefully in the next month. All fluid will be flushed then.

Gen2 cooler is way better than those little stack coolers (I can tell by experience) and since you will be installing it in the front of the bumper right at the lower grille its gets way more air flow to cool it than the one sandwich in the radiator.

So I am 100% clear I should remove the aftermarket one and put the gen2 cooler in its place? I believe I found that same aftermarket cooler on jegs website for 30 bucks. And the gen2 cooler is still the better option than the flex a lite right?

Bypass the Gen 3 cooler all together, remove the crappy one that was previously installed, and get a Gen 2 cooler. That's all you need unless you are "to the floor" at every light. The Gen 2 one has better surface area to help keep things cooler and if you want to go all out, upsize the lines for better flow. IIRC, the same size cooler is used for the power steering as well as the tranny. All of my Gen 3s sufficed just fine with the Gen 2 cooler and I had one of the best AX4Ns out there backing my supercharged Gen 3.

No I'm not to floor at every red light maybe once a week or so do i push the car hard from a stand still. But I do occasionly floor it when I'm running about 60. And seeing its gonna be a hot summer and ill be drivng the highway more id like to make sure the car is cooling right

Actually there is no need to bypass the OEM cooler. It is more than just a hollow pipe. The tube and fin cooler as shown in this thread is not anywhere near as effective as the tank end types.
