Intake question

i have read things that say it is better to jsut get a k&n filter in the stock airbox then getting a a cold air intake,both you can buy on sho source, so i was wondering if anyone knows what would be best to buy

not to be a dick, but this gets debated more than the cost of fuel these days. Some love them and think they help, but I'll pass. I'll stick to my $9 paper filter and keep my 1/12th of a horsepower.

To anwer you question:
Putting in a K&N filter hasn't been shown to net any real performance gains. It does change the intake sound and is noticably louder when the silencer cone has been removed. A CAI set up with the cone filter will cause you to lose power unless you get one like the shocource model that sheilds the filter from the hot air from the engine compartment. While neither K&N setups give you much (if any) hp gain, it has been said that the cone CAI system does increase throttle response.

The paper filter argument is that the K&N only outflows the paper set up when it is clean and only filter as good as the paper when it is dirty. THere for you get very minimal performance gains at the risk of damaging your engine over time.

I personally run a K&N panel filter (came with the car and has been on it for 150K miles). I just turned 170K and she still runs like the day she was born. I am extremely maticulous about all the maintinance stuff so that may have something to do with it.

If you just got the sho I would say the maintinance is the first order of buisness.

I've not come across a single problem with my K&N panel filter in my stock, albeit ''modifie'' airbox. while there may be no noticeable power gains, as stated, intake noise is certainly louder, and damned if i didn't pick up 3mpg with the thing. that, and it's nice to only have to buy one filter and the occasional cleaning kit. by the by, the stock airbox technically is a cold air intake, as it draws cold air from the fender well.

As he said... The stock air box is very good at keeping the intake noise level low. Cone filters sound awsome. K&N panel is louder, and a cone filter is even louder, however you may lose power if not done properly.

Just like any other mod done to the car, you're gonna get mixed reviews. Basically, every car is different...some see gains, some don't. Others have had problems with the oil from the filter fouling the MAF wires, while many haven't. Personally, I've had my K&N for WELL over 100k miles, across the country God only knows how many times and through two engines and like 4 transmissions so far....no problems at all.
