i know that alot of guys in the vw crowd (i know its more then the vw guys but im in the vw crowd and the minitruck crowd) that some of the 4cyl guys will upgrade to a log style manifold to decreace size and up the power some. im just curious, is there enough room to do this? and ive heard the surge tank doesnt have much of baffleing so would it mess up anything to do this? i know that if it could be done it would make getting to the rear coils way easier.

and this could be a great idea for anyone that might wanna run a turbo.

my question is is can it be done? (and i know anythings possible if you try hard enough but im a little curious of clearance.)

Big bore butterflies don’t do jack on the V8 due to its lack of a variable length intake manifold.

There was a prototype intake, that I think came from Yamaha. That was a VLIM but it was later striped and the butterfly valves remained in place. The pre production intake can be viewed here and here

A traditional "Log" style intake would stick out of the hood of the car since it’s a V type engine. But recently log style has become a tank with long intake runners similar to the stock V8 SHO intake. The longer intake runners allow for more torque at lower RPMs. This is caused by "waves" in pressure reflecting back from the throttle body. A proper intake will time the resulting wave to push more air into the cylinder. Before the full understanding of this came about, you find tubes with simple welded "bungs" to the intake side of the cylinder head. This causes unequal pressure going to different cylinders making a **** of a mess and blown motors. Today you find intakes such as the aftermarket ones for an EVO are shaped differently to compensate for this and help equalize pressure. This is also the reason you have all the intake plenum on the old V6 SHO. It’s a unique science, I’ve talked to the owner of AIR they were making an intake manifold for a MR2, Supra, and the EVO. The Supra intake produced some 100 or so horsepower more than the current leading intake.
