input, please :: did i totally screw up my tranny?

i blew the drivers' side CV joint on my '93 MTX a while back...had a spare from my '89, so i put that in...seemed just fine except for the obvious lack of ABS on that side. well, i finally got around to picking up the replacement for the '93 from car quest today and i can't get the damn thing to go into the tranny! it looks like the one that was in there would go back in ok, but i've NEVER had trouble like this getting one of these things in...i'm wondering if i jacked something up.

as far as i can tell, they did give me the right part...verified the numbers and everything and they swear its for the '93 MTX...length matches, splines seem to match...the only thing that looks odd is the one that came off the '89 is a bit more tapered on the inner shaft...probably why it goes in easier.

old part number from the inner shaft assy = E7DW AA 13528

new part number = E6DW CA 1268 1B

inner shaft design is pretty old, eh? maybe they changed it in '87 to something slightly different?

any input here would be greatly appreciated. i can put the old one back in and be mobile again, but i'm starting to get concerned that i've done some damage internally. i was feeling a vibration from the left-front, especially bad when backing up and turning...it's quite likely i did screw something up.

if i did, i'll have to swap trannys, i guess.

she's apart in the driveway right now, so if someone can chime in quick, i'd appreciate it. i'm going to go back out and see if i can't get this thing in. if pics of the splines would help, i can take them...

thanks, all.

ok, i put it back together with the '89 axle...but i cut the boot when i was putting it back in...so, yay.

i actually still had the inner shaft from the one that was originally on the '93...compared it to the one that i just picked up, and unless i'm crazy, it's different. i'm reasonably sure they gave me an incorrect part, but will post pics so you guys can confirm.

thanks!

They can be a bit hard to get in with new C clips on them A quick push usually does the trick.

old close up:

old inner end:

new close up:

new inner end:

not only is there a channel and lip on the new that isn't on the old, the outermost (innermost) splines appear to be thinner on the old one than on the new...either way, it's not an identical part, that's for sure...just trying to put a finger on why i wasn't able to get the new one to seat in the tranny...couldn't even get it started. thoughts?

i know they're not the easiest things to just slip in, but this was ridiculous...no matter what i tried, it wouldn't even start...check the pics, i think i found the reason. i've repalced front axles on all of my SHOs except one, and i did some swapping with the '89, so i've probably done this 10-15 times...never had a problem like this.

check this

As you can see there is a difference in the shafts, that is apperant.Did you mike the diameters and if that matches then you need to count the number of teeth on both the shafts. I have changed many cv's and as much as they say they are the same, thier part #'s are often incorrect.Bring it back.I went threw this at advanced auto with my 90.They kept ordering the same part # and five times it was the wrong side, finally I sat in the parking lot and changed the outer cup and made the cv that I needed and now I do not deal with them.

that's what i was thinking...i honestly forgot that i still had the inner shaft from the original that was on it...since i put the one off the '89 on, i expected some difference, but mistakenly assumed that i'd get what i was supposed to from the shop.

it'll be going back tomorrow...that is, if they're open. =) hopefully, i can find another one before monday...not looking forward to a 200 mile commute with a compromised boot.

thanks again,

given its a SHO specific part, it should have a part number starting with E9DZ.

E7DW indicates 1987 Cougar.

im pretty sure the old Cougar was a solid rear axle RWD. but you could have an IRS with the diff solid mounted and halfshafts like a FWD.

Yeah, it was IRS. At least the super charged 6s.
