The bearing is a unique proprietary bearing. The bearings are not available at any local parts houses, but SHO Source and SHOnut have them in stock and ready to ship. You can buy just the bearing or do a core swap if you do not want to take a chance on damaging a bearing while pressing it into the pulley.

IIRC, the older Gens use the same bearing also if you are in a pinch and are close by a junkyard.

i work in a scrap/core place and i just took some pulley off a late model mustang v6 motor, had my dad make a new spacer at work and all is good..

tho not practical for the average guy.

Yes, they are press in. If they fall apart then they are totally wasted.

I found a replacement bearing for the 3.4 V8 idler pulleys (not the tensioner pulley). I believe this fits the 96-98 3.4 V8s (mine is a 97). The NSK number on the old bearing is BD20-15DWA. You won't find that number anywhere. The correct NSK bearing is BD20-15T12DD. The dimensions of this bearing is: ID:15mm OD:37mm and Width: 15mm. I know it's too late for you but after spending days trying to chase this down i thought I post it anyway.

Thanks a lot I was just searching these odd numbers in old posts !! It's a good idea to put this info here, there are still some owners searching a lot of solutions to keep these exciting cars on the road but only few owners take the time to post their solutions sadly...

My searches only giving me from now these numbers : F6DZ-8678-A (complete pulley), YS-228 (?), 6007 (?) and 92-95 ATX SHO have 2 pulleys fitting on our Gen 3.

F6DZ-8678-A and YS-228 is the tensioner pulley for the water pump which drives off the camshaft on the rear of the engine with a 3/8" belt. I believe the idler pulley part number is F3D2-6B217-B but it is discontinued. I also noticed in my search that most parts houses that say they have an idler pulley really only have the tensioner pulley. If you don't know the size you will get the wrong pulley. Going off my memory, I think the idler pulley OD is 86mm. The pulley on the tensioner is 76mm OD. The bearing ID is also different. The idler pulley ID is 20mm and the tensioner pulley is 17mm. If you are going to buy just the bearing, I suggest you don't waste your time at a parts house. Go to a bearing store and take the time to shop around. Prices varied over $15. I live in Utah, bought the bearing from a store in Texas and it shipped from the NSK warehouse in Indiana.

As long as the spacing and bolt hole are the same, the diameter of the pulley is not critical.

Being the tightwad that I am and having had a great old grandfather teach me some neat stuff, the actual bearing can be re-filled with grease. I copied a pinpoint grease gun attachment my grandfather made for his pistol grip gun. On steel shield bearings, I punch a small hole in the shield and inject high temp wheel bearing grease. After cleaning off the excess grease, I melt a dab of solder to close up the hole. The seals are spring fit and can be removed for cleaning out the old dried grease if you want, thereby negating the need for a hole to be punched.

I'm wondering if the pulleys aren't the same between V8 3.4 and V6 2.5 liters ?

I called today my local NAPA store and want to sold me a Gates #38005 with a 17mm center bore... Rockauto has them too but it's wrote on the bearing "China"... Not sure I will take it for 44$. (Wrong info, they are not the same but will probably fit.)

Thinking about your solution Off Road SHO, as they have double lined balls and as they can handle angular force, maybe we can just reverse their position (better after a cleaning). One line of balls works harder, reversing them can help a little. Probably not another 200 000 km (130k miles) as they seems to be rated.
