Idle a little rough, misfires, hard starting, need help!!!!

Problems on my 94 MTX (113k on it)- :confused: I normally shift (around 2000 RPM's) or even higher, my car "stumbles" it feels like its missing, its really noticeable going up hills. Every now and then it won't start, but then will on the second try. It idles a little rough, but not real rough. Pulled apart the intake, there is a thick coat of grime and oil (not anymore), valve lash is good on all 24, so I think the 60k was performed. Fuel pressure reads good, but whining noise from fuel pump. No oil in plug wells :) . How do you tell if timing belt needs to be replaced (deflection, wear signs??)? Plugs are in excellent shape :) . Any suggestions??? THanks

Well, start shifting higher for starters. Your car will appreciate it and so will you. Carbon build up is common on the inside of the intake. Clean it out along with the throttle body. You may want to consider replacing your plug wires as you can recoup some, actually a lot, of power there. (I did) Fuel pump should make a steady humming sound, if not the prepare yourself to replace it soon. Preferable before it's gone all the way and leaves you stranded.

Timing belt info I'm leaving to those who know more than I.

The whining fuel pump means it wants to be replaced before it quits completely. And yeah, you have to shift higher than 2000 RPM. Your bearings will be much happier, and so will you when you hear that motor buzz up to about 5000 RPM every now and then. thumbs_u

Cleaning the intake is always a good thing, but you probably could use a new set of plug wires. Ford Parts Network has them for about $84. As for the timing belt, look for signs of wear like fraying, cracking, and things like that. If the belt on the car now looks worn, it probably is, and a replacement is in order. I think Autozone has the best price on the timing belt, but I'm not sure; you might want to check.

At 113k, unless you know the belt has been changed in the last 60k or so, change it. It's called preventative maintenance. Let's quote Fram, "Pay a little now, or pay a lot later".
