Haven't noticed that anybody has mentioned cams. The SHO motor IS a rice-burner, remember.....just a BIG one. It has plenty of intake capability with those 12 snakes, and with hiflow cats/y-pipe on the exhaust, all that's needed is some more aggressive camming in the middle. The original camming was for a fully dressed out sedan with all options, nice driveability, emissions, gas mileage, A/C, etc. Try to find a set of cams that has degreed drive sprockets with some optional timing tweaks. That way you can choose a little more midrange torque or more topend power, or some of each.

Realistically, how much power can a healthy ATX take ?

my 95 ATX is just going to be a cruiser but i thought a 50 shot for random encounters might be fun. im installing a 74k mile trans and the motor has 104k, i hope they both have some decent life left.

I'd say on the safe side....about 300ftlbs of tq...out of a worked over transmission! Cams and nitrous would really wake up the atx on the top end, where it needs it the most... ATX after 3 gear is a dog! I think the stage 2 cams on the top end would be the best! I sure even a set of 3.0 litter cams would help alittle bit!

depends on how its driven. They arent complete opposites of the MTX in that they can handle lots of power stock. a 50 shot with a higher stall torque converter, some good fluid and a bigger trans cooler would be fun though.

Honestly,my MTX really does move with just a y-pipe and an exhaust impressed with it and so is everybody who drives in it..

However i gave up on modding the SHO i went with a different platform..1987 T/A spent $5,000 dropped a crate engine and bam im at 400hp no headaches.
KITT, turbo boost!
