The compressors are the same for both R12 and R134A. My system had been dry for a while so I replaced the compressor and used a conversion kit with compatible oil and pumped it full of R134A. It didn't take the R134A for some reason so I had to take it to a shop and they filled it up. It has been working since with no problems.

I just had it done a few weeks ago on the '89. The Retrofit kit was only $159.95. If the rest of my system was in good shape, that's all it would have cost.

As it was, the compressor was dead (bypassed by the PO), and the typical lines that run under the battery had leaks, so they replaced those.

Dunno where you are at in MI, but I had mine done at Lake Orion Master Radiator, who are the guys that do most of my mechanical stuff.

*cough* i got my retro fit kit on clerence for 19.99*cough*

And that was enough to totally complete the job?

Sorry, $160 for a turnkey solution, plus someone's ass to kick if it ain't right, is well worth it.

A few years back it was $500 - $1,000 for folks to do it before they got it figured out.
