I thought it was a great deal...

I've got transmission woes...and I don't exactly know what they are.

Last week i bought my first SHO--an 89 in titanium with basket weave wheels...it had the usual taurus rust on the decklid and a little around the doors but it ran beautifully and I took it home....after paying the man 700 dollars.
Cut to the chase---there were no leaks or anything when i started driving home but...the vehicle seemed to have developed some kind of leak in the gearbox and threw oil on the exhaust. It got hot so i decided to let it sit awhile. I checked underneath and it looked like Power steering fluid dripping down the gearbox. I didn't worry. I should have.

After taking it to wal-mart for some keys, (the route includes 2 dirt roads *rallySHO?*) I was driving like a reasonable individual burn_out and the front wheels locked up and the car slid to a stop.

When you have the clutch pedal pushed in, there's no problems. However, when the clutch is out-there's a high pitched screech....metal against metal....

When you try to drive---
It's as if you dropped a cat and a handful of nickels in the dryer.

There's the problem....i'd like to find help with a solution/diagnosis.
Thanks
Steve

If the seller won't give you your money back, your actions now should be in the legal arena. I'm sorry that your first experience with a SHO was so tragic.

For 700 bucks, it still doesn't sound like a bad deal. So you have to drop in another transmission and clutch. Say $1500 tops, and you have a decent running car. You can't beat that.

Dude that sucks.

You should've bought my SHO. Mines got a new clutch and tranny already in it!

Are you telling us the whole story?

Are you sure the tranny didn't make noises while you test drove it.
You did test drive it right?

sounds like the diff pin let go. Common probelm with a high mileage SHO.

My buddy popped his diff pin and it knocked a huge hole in the case.

I am working on tranny #3..same problem the first 2 times

Yes---I did test drive the car. I bought it on Ebay and drove before I bid. I don't know how that could go unnoticed or maybe I just didn't drive it hard enough to uncover any problems. I'm keeping the car though. There's no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater...It'll be awhile till i can drive it again because, well, I don't have a lift and i've got bills to pay. I figure i'll have a good car with less than 2500 invested though. After a transmission, some subframe connectors, and new struts/springs/bushings all around we'll be doing right.

Hey Rusty, i just bought a $750 89 Lt Titanium SHO and have only spent about $500 on her, and she runs beautifully. Just a few things like temp gauge not working, fuses blowing, ect. Still a great car. You should've spent the extra $50. Ha ha ha. wink beer

Timbo, easy up. The situations could easily have been reversed and you could have the car that needs a new tranny. Let's try to be just a little sensitive to Steve. I know I'd be a bit upset if I were in his situation.

There's no reason to be sensitive to me...i's a big boy. Besides, I bought this for a project anyway (AutoX/maybe....rally? I live in the country and there's lots of curvy dirt and gravel roads around me---with 55mph speed limits....to practice) I'm just slightly ****** that the tranny dropped the day i bought it. Oh well. I know where my money's going.

I had a friend in 95 who had a black 91+ and he threw out 3 diff pins. By 98 he had a quaife under it.

There is no legitimate lagal action that can be taken here. It sounds as if the differential pin let loose and if that is the case there is no way the previous owner could have known.

On another note, my buddy lives out in the country and we took his Grand Am off roading a couple weeks ago... HOLY SH*T that's fun! We were taking 90 degree turns on a 1 lane gravel road and almost slid into a pond! Goodtimes! thumbs_u
