Greetigs all, The past couple months I have been in search of a new project. At the local auto auction I ran across a 90 SHO MTX. I got her for 1470$. 181,000k, real nice interior, perfect exterior. This will be a long term project designed to keep me at home and out of trouble. This is a 2 owner car, owner 2 bought the car with 54k on it and I found all receipts for the work he did in the glove box. The MTX was replaced at 103k with a used one with 12k on it. It seems to shift ok, what is the life expectancy on these? The valve cover gaskets and plug gromets are leaking. If I'm going to spend the cash on replacing those, might as well pull the engine and go through it. Can't find that cam belts were ever replaced either. How much does a rebuild kit run for these, where can I find one? Only choice around here is Auto Zone....NOT. Is there a stroker crank out there? Have many questions to ask later, This is first FWD ever in my garage. Thanks for any help.

Congrats on your purchase. You won't be sorry. As for the trans/clutch life...I think that all depends on how it's driven. I had to replace my clutch at about 70K, but I think my car had been driven hard before I got her. Not that I'm a sissy driver either, but I don't ride the clutch. I would think you'd have a good bit more life in the trans though and the life I'm sure varies widely.

As for pulling the engine...if you have the time and money to do it go for it. Other that that a good 60K service would be sufficient. Adjust the valve lash, change the water pump, the crank position and cam shaft sensors, change your belts, gaskets, plugs and t-stat, etc. you should be in very good shape.

Best of luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

Welcome aboard, I saw your name and I'm wondering if you are a Jim Morrison/Doors fan b/c of the Lizard King?? They are awesome.

Umm plug wells and valve covers are pretty easy to do (maybe 4-6 hours for a DIY job) and you can do the 60K valve shims at the same time. I wouldn't pull the engine for that. If this is long term adjust the valves and let the timing belt go... its a non interferring engine so if it breaks fix it then...

Also autozone fel pro gasket set is the bomb for what you are replacing (valve covers and plug seals...) you get them all for 74.

If this is a project car and you want to make sure it is in good shape, I recommend that you replace the timing belt if it has more than 60,000 mile on it. The belt is only $33 (RockAuto.com) and a good project experience to replace.
