Ok so i finally took it to the shop. The first thing he did was pull the tranny dip stick out and he smelled it.. he was like hmm smells like it is burnt. He said right there i am proably burning my clutch plates up. So then he pulled my codes.. Just like you guys said my vss did through a code. So then i told him what was going on and every thing. down shifting hard and only doing it when it gets warmed up. And then i told him about when it gets warm and i put it in park it like grinds.. He said thats the clutch not dis ingaugeing. he said thats bad. So he told me basicly my trann is toast.. :( he said we could replace the vss. But he said that proably wont fix the problem. So then he told me the vss is in the trans. so you might as well fix the trans while u are in there. He told me i should get a trans from ford. he told me it should have some updates on it like new cylnderss and values. But see my bro works at ford so he should be able to get the tranny for me at a great price.

What do you guys and gals think about this?
Let me know!!!

Uh OH! Another 93 atx tranny bites the dust! Well my advice is to get someone that knows how to improve upon the 93s faults right off the bat. I think it had something to do with the lack of oil in the planetary gears in the 93s. Have whoever installs it, to put an oil dam in the tranny to keep oil in the gears longer. Also I suggest to use synthetic tranny fluid right off the bat, and add an auxiliary cooler. I use a Hayden 26 that only cools the tranny, and I don't have any coolant lines going to it from the motor. Take it from me..I have burned up my fair share...oh BTW..have him also install a trans-go kit. It will help firm up shifts and also aid in maintaining fluid line pressure and lubrication of the tranny. Sorry to hear of your loss, but with these precautions, you won't have to bring the car back anytime soon..

My ATX started acting up tonight....

I was doing about 100mph, in 4th and the tach started surging ahead 500rpm, then falling back. I dunno, but it seemed to me like the tranny is slipping. But, the car does need a tune up, and it seems something has it clogged. I imagine that it has oil in the plug wells and it is running rich, so I am praying that my tranny isn't crapping out...

any ideas?

the concensus here seems to be get a doug lewis built tranny. he is in Atlanta. Personally, I wouldn't have a ford ATX, but, alot of these guys swear by the doug lewis ATXs.

It doesn`t sound like you know much of Doug. His built trannys are bulletproof, not just stock with some small upgrades.Once you have one, your ATX will never have to be replaced again.

Sure, you will spend some dime up front for it, (not sure of the cost) however it will be a ONE time cost and NO ONE that I know of can build them better. If you don't know already, Doug Lewis is the person that built the tranny that goes into, works and has survived in my Supercharged Atx.

If you can't get your 60K done, at least get your tranny serviced pronto!! Have them use RedLine fluid in it.

I replace the VSS last year on my 94. The part cost $62.00 for the delaer. The sensor is NOT in the tranny. It is located on the top, passenger side on the transmission. You do have to drop the "Y" pipe. I had the dealer replace it and it was less than $160.00 to have it done.

The guy that owned my car before me was a Ford Master Mechanic. He didn't like the soft shifts to he and some other coworkers figured out a way to use the shift plates out of a '98 SHO in it with some other mods. The custom tranny is sweet. It can keep up with MTX's and every shift is nice and firm. I drove 20+ SHO's before buying mine and none of them could compare to mine transmission wise.

You sure that grinding is coming from the tranny. Maybe its the fuel check valve? My car does the grinding noise when i start it up sometimes its the fuel check valve which will be replaced soon.

Hello My 95 ATX does the same shutter thing after it sits for a week without being started. Is it a tranny problem or engine, it seems once it gets "cleaned out" its fine. What kind of shift kit is good to get it to shift sooner and how much will it run me?

Thanks

Well the actual shift kit is actually pretty reasonable, but you have to get a basic rebuild to install it. The kit itself runs about $75 if you want.
