With gas prices going up, and 93 octane at $4.57 and climbing where I live, would it be possible to mix roughly 13 gallons of ethanol free 87 octane with 6 gallons of E85 (105 octane). I ran it through a calculator and it returned and octane of just over 92.

My only concern is the stock fuel pump. Any thoughts? I figured the ethanol free 87 would offset the issues encountered with too much ethanol. I will probably run 88 to save some money, but if this works it will be the same price.

So the big question is what% is the e85? Not all are the same and this has a huge affect to your calculations. Can be 50% to as high as 90% e content, thus changing the ratio by a large amount.

Fuel it etched tester is cheap. I like I can check before filling up.

In my travels through Wisconsin last summer, I found ethanol-free 91. It was awesome! Temps were over 90 both ways through WI over the 4th of July, and I got a steady 2-2.5 better mpg over 10% alky 93, running my usual 79-80 on the Interstate.

The better BTUs of straight gas are better than the octane number. I wish more states would get smart and move away from alky gas. I would just run the alky-free 91 in Wisconsin, and not go through the mixing just to get 92.20210704 120144

Oh no! Quite rare, from what I've seen in various states.

I know of nowhere to buy ethanol-free vehicle gas in SE Michigan.

Yes, Kroger carries pure-gas 90, but it's 60 cents/gallon higher than 93 (which is 60 cents higher than 87),meant for small engines. And I suspect about the same price as ethanol-free gas at marinas.

Yeah it's nice to have a choice between 93 octane with ethanol and then 91 ethanol free at pretty much every Kwik Trip that I have been to. If you haven't been to Wisconsin, Kwik Trip is second only to the Green Bay Packers in this state when it comes to cult like followings. 91 octane was $4.89 today with 87 and 88 at $4.09. I might get a tune to run 87 but I really don't want to.

As for the fuel it etched tester, do you just buy a tiny amount and put it in a gas can and then put some in the tester? Is that something you have to do every time you fill up, or is the fuel pretty consistent once you find what the station is running?

I use a plastic water bottle (the fuel nossle will fit in it), keep one for fuel and one full of water to add to it. I just add enough to run the test at first and if it's shit then don't fuel up. I have found I tested the main stations I use and found they are consistent. I don't test much anymore unless I go to someplace unfamiliar. If I road trip I put in the 93 tune so I don't have to find e85.

I was buying it at BP stations on my trip through WI last year. I'll be headed through there at the end of April, so I'll be planning on getting it there again. Getting gas in IN lets me get through IL without spending a penny there (well, except for the Tolls), so WI is a good gas area.
