This piece - due to stupidity on my part (not putting tape around the opening after removing the ashtray when cutting away some metal behind the dash...then having the chuck of the dremel rub up against it) I have a gouge and a cut in the leather near the ashtray.

I know that it's removable because Ray has a brown one for sale on ebay. What all has to come out, how many bolts/screws are there, etc? I'd like to see if I can find one at a pick 'n pull for cheaper than the upholstery shop wants to fix the one I've got. I think I've got the little tools for removing Ford radios around here somewhere...if not they're only a couple bucks at Wal-Mart.

It's been a while but I think most of it is held in with press in fasteners. The football and the ashtray area has to come out. See how far you get with those two items removed. There is a diagram in the Helm's manual and I would bet it's in the Chilton/Haynes manuals too.
