For the past 2 weeks my car's been making this odd hum/grinding noise, something that i thought might've been transmission wine or something. So, i checked my mtx fuild and filled it up to the filler plug, took about 1/4 a quart (i think its leaking slightly). The sound was still there even after driving 40+ miles. Then i get off the highway yesterday, 75mph for 80 miles, and the sound is really noticable now. I'm thinking its a leak and my exhaust cause it changes with engine speed and i'm hoping its a gasket, because my pipes are not that old, and are hardly rusting. Has anyone had expirence with changing the gasket between the downpipe and the mid-pipe, right near the shift linkage? And it is possible to do on your own? Thanks for any ideas

its pretty easy to find an exhaust leak if you think you might have one.....just take your palms and cover the exhaust pipes coming out the back while its running and have someone else be up near the mid pipe to see if they hear any air rushing out of any holes. You'll be able to tell in a couple seconds if there's a leak.

are the bolts holding the mid-pipe and down-pipe together under alot of compression --if i remember right, the bolts are surrounded by springs. And MADDOG, i'm assuming the gasket between the two pipes was causing your leak to, is that right?

Correct! I say bring an impact due to the rust on the bolts. Makes it alot easlier!

Alright thanks, i was not sure if it was an exhaust leak or tranny wine because for the past 2 weeks it wasn't loud enough to be a recognizable leak, and it only seemed to happen in the first 2 gears, until i got off the highway and it sounded like a civic with coffee can mufflers lol

If the bolts are rusty I would soak them with some WD-40 or something similar so they wont break as easily. I lost both of my bolts when I removed my y-pipe and I was able to find some replacement bolts in the "HELP!" section of AutoZone.
