I checked out ebay and some of the hitch receivers for a Taurus said "except SHO." I'd think they would be compatible? Any input appreciated. Thanks.

My first white 94 had one, too. I never used it either.... I think that the rating was either 500 or 1000 lbs.

Wonder if anyone's ever raced with a trailer attached to one.

On a track, no. On I90 headed to South Haven MI two years ago, yes. 2002 or so GTI was busting balls, so I busted back. I was damn close to bump drafting, IIRC about 110 or so.

In my defense, the trailer DID have Z-rated tires on it. :)

Actually, my father in law has towed an sho with an sho. He pulled a G3 with his G1 from MI to IL lol. His car also has over 300k miles.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't plan on pulling anything. I'm more looking for something to attach a chain to when I get stuck in the winter. Is the motor/drivetrain the reason for the 500/1000 lb rating? I mean if I use some stronger fasteners I shouldn't have any issues if it gets the **** yanked out of it, should I? Thanks again. -Joe

The tow rating is more based on the weight of the car, the excess load capacity in the tires and (primarily) rear suspension, and the engine/trans, especially the clutch: Lots of 'Mericans can't drive a 3-pedal car, much less tow anything with one.

I'm not sure I'd use a class 2 hitch to pull a 3500 pound car from a snowbank, irrespective of the fastener grade securing the hitch to the car body. The structure behind the spare tire well is just sheet metal box beams, mostly it's there to hold up the rear bumper and absorb energy in a rear-ender.

IMO, I just can't imagine trying to tow with a SHO. You'd have to run in 3rd, or you'll tear OD out of your car. Towing with a unibody car is always a bad idea, especially one setup for performance, not extra weight on the rear.

And if you want to put it on just for a spot to hookup in case you go into the ditch, then just slow down and you won't go into it :)

Driven mine in Wisconsin, northern Michigan and Minnesota all winter without incident. Go slow, and you'll be good :munch:

Nah, I run 5th in mine with the small trailer with no issues. Something heavier, most likely yes.

Where's Scott Patterson to chime in on this? He's towed a boat with his for many years!

I suppose with a 5 speed, maybe it'd work better. i just can't imagine trying to tow something really heavy with my AXOD ATX.
I could be wrong (and knowing me, I probably am)
