I pumped out all the old transmision fluid this morning to change it and got around 6 quarts!
The guy that I bought the car from was a mechanic and he mentioned he had changed the fluid a short while before I bought the car. There have been minor problems with the transmission since I bought it. I wondered if overfilling the transmission is a tactic to hide problems?

You should have gotten 12-14 quarts if you truly sucked all the fluid out. Overfilling is just as bad as low fluid. as in the fluid will foam from hitting moving parts and the clutches in the trans cannot compress liquid but the air bubles it can. thus leading to trans failure

the 3.2 is for an MTX. You have an ATX. If someone could fit 6 quarts into an MTX I'd give them a cookie :D . hehe

I'm assuming you have an ATX here. What do you mean by "pumped out"? Did you just unhook one of the cooler lines and run the car until it stopped flowing? If so then all you will get is 5-6 quarts. The tranny will stop pumping after it has emptied the pan and started sucking air.

To flush the entire system, you need to hook up a hose to the tranny cooler return line and put the end of the hose in a pail of fresh ATF. The tranny will suck in the new fluid as the old fluid is pumped out the pressure line. Once it has sucked in 12-14 quarts, all the old fluid will be out and you can shut the car off.
