how do you remove the thick cable in back of the instument cluster on a 94 atx?

If you are referring to the light grey, round cable that runs straight out the back of the cluster and goes through the firewall, first, you should disconnect that cable in the engine bay. Then it will allow you to pull the cable into the cabin with the cluster so that you can get your hand on the white plastic retaining clip at the cluster. Press the two tabs on the retaining clip, and the cable will release.
