i just picked up a 91 for $400 at an abandoned car auction. when i got it home i noticed a PROFUSE power steering leak. (1 quart every 2 days). i fixed that. it was a loose line out of the rack. HOORAY easy fix. i went to start the car after fixing the leak and and it was popping and sputtering and wouldnt fire off. i finally got it to start. once it started the tach wasnt working. it ran fine, no misfires or anything like that. i talked to a ford tech buddy of mine and he said the tach signal comes off the ckp. well i went ahead and bit the bullet and replaced the ckp. didnt fix it. i figured the next thing is the dis. went and got a new one. didnt fix it. however when you unplug the dis and crank... it cranks great. doesnt pop or anything. sounds like it normally should. i checked out a wiring diagram and the only thing left i can think of is cps or ecm. when i unplugged the cps there was no change in the way it cranked. another thing i noticed is when im cranking the car the tach will show about 300 rpms but once it starts it doesnt work. there is no check engine light. i dont know if there are any codes because i dont have a code reader and i dont know how to check them without one. any insight would be helpful. the next step for me is going to be to replace the cps.

thanks a million

have you ever experienced this problem. if so what was the cause. i cant really afford to keep throwing parts at it. and i dont have the money to do a diagnosis in a shop. especially since the "s" in the SHO emblem looks like a $ to them.

To me it's weird that your tach works while cranking but when it's running it won't work at all. Aside from a wiring problem the last two things that I can think of is a bad cam sensor or PCM.

It's the cam sensor. You Ford tech buddy was mistaken, the tach is run off the cam sensor not the crank sensor.

Lesson #1 Never bring a old SHO in a Ford dealer. the techs that worked on them back then are long gone (or dont remember anything about them).

The SHO is alone in its league , the only people you should trust is the people on the shoforum.

Oh but dont worry , alot of us did that mistake once - including me.

well i have to tell you... there are some people on the shoforum who i shouldnt trust either. there are some people who dont know what they're talking about. not saying your one of them. just simply making a point.

Yup you got that right , You help you figure out who's telling the truth or close to it , usually with the join date , the reputation and the post counts should help you decide who's on the right track. Not 100% accuracy , but it should be heavier in the balance then some newb that just came in.
