Help with turbo size

I was looking into putting a turbo on my 91 MTX and was wondering what size turbo would be appropriate. I won't be going above 8 psi.

So if a T28 is to small what size do I need. A T3 or T4, I have seen a SHO with a hybrid T3/T4 turbo, but was hoping a cheaper turbo would do the job.

A t3/4 is not expensive. But even a t3/4 will be outflowed soon enough. My turbo (60-1 HIFI) brand new (compressor and turbine, polished housing, straight retail from Turbonetics) is around $800. That is a pretty good deal I feel.

With the time and money it is going to take to get a turbo SHO up and running properly, the price difference between a cheap undersized and poorly designed (for your particular airflow needs) and the right compressor is very small. THe 60-1 HIFI will be good for over 400hp to the wheels on sane boost levels and is very compact.

Ok Toolman, I know you own a turbo SHO so I am going to trust your advice. I looked on the turbonetics site and I think I see the turbo you are describing.
Is it part# HA-TURBO. It says 60-1 HiFi Turbo Assy for $832.

It would, and a t3/4 was on this car before the change to the 60-1. But mating the right compressor to your engine is more than just about making HP. This engine has a very high VE (volumetric efficiency) in NA form. DO any work to the airbox, intake, heads and you increase that VE. This engine is also capable of sustained high RPM use, and will willingly rev to 8000rpm. With those charecteristics, the airflow capacity of a t3 will be overeached quickly. You will be overspinning that poor little comrpessor wheel, which will mean MORE heat, and that is BAD. What you will end up with is a compressor with VERY little lag, but one that chokes itself off up high. According to the original owner of this car, the switch from the t3/4 to the 60-1 made the car much more drivable around town, with easier and smoother throttle application.

Just because you have a turbo capable of making big power does mean you have to make that kind of power. On 7-8 psi, I would probably only be @ 310whp or so. But trust me, once you get a taste of boost, YOU WILL BECOME ADDICTED!! Why limit yourself by poor compressor choice? And the bigger benefit is a more tractable and livable boost curve. Honestly, I do not think there are many choices better then the 60-1 (maybe a 62-1) as far as compressor maps are concerned (and it is MUCH less expensive than the T-series).

You will get oil from the back of the block, and you will need a T fitting in a 1/4npt size. The fitting will go where the oil pressure sender goes. It's on the drivers side, under the rear head and above the oil pan.

Where can I find a table or something of compressor to engine size table? How do you match up/figure out what goes with what?

If you purchase one from the major vendors they have all the stuff at their disposal to calculate for you. All you need to do is email or call them. You will need certain specs. Look at the example calcs. to see what the inputs are, get the necessary info, and relay that to them.

BTW alot of people use the one from the first link but you would need JAVA to use it.

Thanks SHO--ripper for the tip. Also will my stock oil pump handle the additional load, and I want to put an oil cooler in but didnt know if one was avalible for the SHO.

you should be able to find a universal oil cooler pretty easy

Not sure if I should ask this question here, but I am looking to buy a welder to do the exhaust for the turbo and was wondering what wattage MIG I should buy?

No idea what wattage MIG I have, but it is quite adjustable, and has worked great for the exhaust work I have done.

As far as an oil cooler, the turbo runs very cool, the oil pump has proven quite effective, and the stock oil cooler seems to work very well. You will find you do not have a lot of extra room under there once everything is installed. I would save that room for a tranny cooler, at least that is what I will be installing.
