Help with Cooling Fan Problem

Saturday, I replaced the thermostat (195 degree) and the engine coolant sensor. This took care of my operating temperature and most of my overheating (due to traffic stop and go)problems. HOWEVER, it did not fix my fan problem. My fan turns on when the temperature rises, but it doesn't stay on long enough (usually 3 to 5 seconds) to be affective. It will not keep the car from overheating (although it takes longer to do so with the new thermostat).

ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have the dealership look at it if I don't have too. Their rates are way to high for something I can fix myself.

Replace your ETC (Engine Temperature Control) Switch. It not only tells the computer how warm or cold your engine is, it also controls the cooling fan.

The CCRM,,black box above radiator,, contains the relays that run the fan. On both my 92 and 95 if the interior fan is set to its highest setting the engine fan is forced on. That can keep your engine temp down if the computer doesn't.

Your computer and relay box are doing there job from what you stated. I had this problem 8 months ago and this is how I fixed it.

Take your fan motor and shroud out. Buy some electric motor/brake cleaner. It has to say electric motor on it. Spin the motor by hand and spray the hole can into the fan motor. Just keep spinning it 'til the can empties. Once it empties used compress air to blow out the inside and let it dry after for 15 minutes. While this is drying Use the cleaner on the connectors of the fan motor and the car. Once clean install the fan back on, use a bit of dielectric grease on the connector and you'll be set. If this does not work for you then its time for a new motor.

You state that the fan turns on so that means that the ECT and relay box are doing it job. What is happening to your is the fan is pulling to much amperage and kicks the fan off after a few seconds.

Anyways, 8 months later and going strong.
