Hey everybody. Glad to be a member. I own a 1992 Dark Metallic Forest Green Mtx. I have owned it since August 2002. I have not had a problem with this SHO until last week.

But here's the deal:
Last Sat, I was out and about, tried to start my car, but nothing. I deduced it was the starter.
So... I know everybody is about to cringe when I say this, but I pop-started it. Yeah, I know, very bad. But I had to get home. So I get it home and replace the starter. It started up, but here's my new problem - when I romp on the gas, or just push it for that matter, there is a dead spot. If ease into the gas, then it doesn't feel like it's gonna die. But after i get out of 1st and go into 2nd (or 3rd or 4th etc) when I get to 2500 rpm, it feels like it's going to die. Then I let up on the gas and the car goes. This never happened before I pop-started it. I put it on the computer and it came up that I needed a TPS and a B.A.P. Put new ones in and that did not fix it. Could I have somehow screwed up my car by pop-starting it? If anyone has ever dealt with this problem PLEASE help! Thanks for anyhelp you guys and/or gals can give.

Just for ***** and giggles, did you reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes?

Disconnect the battery for awhile. When changing out sensors related to the engine, the computer needs to see that the changes were made.

Try resetting the computer.

Good luck.

Where in MA?

still no change. Could I have screwed the timing up? It feels like a fuel delivery problem but I have no clue.

yea the codes I got were "T.P.S out of range"
and "M.A.P/B.A.P out of range". I also pulled a 136 which is the O2 sensors but I know those are good. I replaced the TPS and the BAP today and reset the computer. Still no change.

Autosho: the M.A.F? Is that the mass air flow meter. On the intake hose right?

The MAF is one the intake hose. How many miles on the car? How do you know the 02's are good? Did you replace them?

yea they were replaced last year. But even if they were bad it wouldn't cause the car to do what it's doing. As for miles... The speedo cable was busted when I bought the car in August 02' and I found out that it stopped working about 6 months before that. So when I bought it, it said 178,000 and still does almost a year and a half later. So I would quesstamate it has about 240,000 by now. especially with all the driving I do. Up until last sat this car ran better than any car I have ever owned or any car that my friends own.

I had close to the same problem as you with the car pausing at wot until you let off the gas, a good cleaning of the MAF sensor did the job and its run good at wot ever since.

Descent, I don't believe you reset the computer properly. I think you need to reset your computer by running the KOEO test, then disconnect the wire to the EEC Test box, re-connect it...that should do it, unless it is totally different for 92 MTX versus a 93 ATX.

Sorry to sound like a dunce but, I have no clue how to do that or what the KOEO test. If you could let me know that would be great. Thanks every for all your help too. I really appreciate it.

If you want to reset the computer, pop your hood, go to the passenger side of the motor, right by the firewall there should be 2 plastic wire terminals. One with 6 holes in it, and one small one with 1 hole. Take a piece of wire(or paperclip) and jump the 1 hole terminal with the top right hole in the 6 hole terminal (When you are looking at the bigger one, the 4 holes are on the bottom and 2 are on the top use the top right hole.) Go in your car and turn the ignition on but do not start the car. The CEL will flash your codes. As it is repeating them, with the key still on and engine off, go under the hood and pull the wire out of the terminals. Shut the car off and you are done.

Hope this helps. thumb

If your battery is disconnected for more than 5 minutes the PCM is cleared. If in doubt disconnect the battery and use a voltmeter across the POS wires to ground (not the battery). You will see 0 volts in no time. 0 volts, 0 retained data. This is not true for ABS codes AFAIK.

Here's a couple of places to check out:

http://www.midwestsho.com/catalog/troubleshooting.php?codes=instructions

http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0&sid=83

After trying many times, disconnecting my battery just never cleared the codes. The codes finally cleared when I pulled the paper clip from the EEC Test Module while running the Key On Engine Off test...Like MYFirstSHO said...

Ok, thanks all. Tried all that. still the same. I guess the next thing to do would be to replace the mass air and the ignition module. every mechanic that I have talked to said that would be the next course of action. I will try that tomorrow and I will report back. Thanks again.

Take the MAF out and clean it. Put it back. In check your 02s

Also how is your fuel system, is it stock? Could maybe be gasping for fuel
