Help...strange noise

ok, I have an 89.

I got both belts replaced about 1 month ago, and the other day I noticed that my car is making a higher pitched noise that goes up and down with the revs (at first I thought it was engine whine on my stereo).
It does it while idling in neutral as well.
I took it back to the place that did my belts and they figure it might be a belt tensoner or even my timing belt.

any ideas?

I have a new Good Year Poly-Cog accessory belt that I installed about 2 months ago and yes it does have a subtle whine to it as it is new. I kinda like it (sounds like a small supercharger)The tension pulley is spring loaded on my 95 and I dont have to adjust it because it sets itself.

You said you had the belts replaced, does that mean both the timing belt and the accessory belt?

It is not unusual for some of the serpentine belts, such as the Goodyear polycog, to give off a little whine when new. There is a chance they overtightened the tensioner. With the engine off, check the span of the belt between the crankshaft damper and the A/C compressor pulley. You can reach this span from below the splash shield. Press on the center of the span with a firm finger. There should be about 1/4" of deflection in the belt. If you can only move it about 1/8" or so, you could relax the tensioner a little. To do that, loosen the 14mm nut in the center of the tensioner pulley about 1/2 turn. Now rotate the 5mm Allen head screw at the top of the tensioner in the counterclockwise direction until you get about a 1/4" deflection in that span of the belt. The belt only needs to be tight enough to prevent the "chirp" when the A/C compressor engages at highway speed rpms. Too tigh and it will shoten the life of the various pulleys in the system. When finished adjusting, torque the center nut to 25-37 lb-ft.

I stopped worrying about my car's making strange noises long ago. They're either inconsequential, or I can't afford to fix them. Mostly I just can't afford to fix them. frown

ok, just got back from the garage. at first the mechanic thought it was the water pump, as there is a little play in it.

AFter putting it on the hoist, it did turn out to be the tensioner pully (bearing). I always thought these things were self-adjusting (self-tightening/whatever).

Do you think the place that installed the belts, tightened the pulley too much, which screwed the thing up?

of course you can't buy just a bearing, and ford wants 165.00 (cdn) for the pulley
