I am in the process of replaceing the mufflers on my cat back system, it is a bolt on system. The muffler seems to be rusted to to the pipe. What can i do to get them broken free?

If it's been on there a long time (especially if you like in salted road region) it might be more than difficult to remove it from the pipe. You might have to cut it off. I would both heat and beat the **** out of it before i cut it off but that may be your final option. Know someone with a welder?

your best bet is to get a cut off wheel and make some cuts on the muffler pipe and then use a pry bar and hammer to just remove the muffler off the other pipe. Just dont cut to deep and cut the other pipe. I have done this on just about every car that I just needed to replace the muffler or just one pipe in the exhaust to get the pipes off without having to replace the rest of the exhaust system.

Heat the bolt and nut with a blowtorch, and cool the bolt with an ice cube. The bolt will shrink away from the nut and release. Keep the ice away from the nut.

wrap a belt around the muffler, and use a big peice of something.. jack handle maybe and make a big strap wrench.

I've found most rusty things like to come off easier once you can get them to turn a little bit.... or use a die grinder, sawzall and wack it off of there... :)

I ended having to take it to Meineke. They charged me $60 to take the old ones off and put the new ones on with a new rubber hanger on one side. I was shown the old mufflers they ended up have to take a torch and cut the mufflers off. Thanks for all the reply's.
