just when I fix the radiatore the heater core went out. The only problem is I can't get the black plastice that surrounds it out. It would help me alot if some one could tell me an easy way to to get to it ( with out destroying it)

Drop the steering column. Remove the dash (just have to drop it back onto the seats, you don't have to remove it completely from the car).

Then remove the heater box (that's the black plastic case that the core is in). You will also need to disconnect the AC lines from the evaporator (more fun there).

Unless you are a serious DIYer, plan on at least 12-15 hours labor to replace the stupid 20 dollar part. A shop will probably charge you 8-10 hours for the job. I did mine in only 10 days. Do a search on my posts from last fall for some of the fun I had.

my father in law raded in an otherwise perfectly good crown vic a few years back because of this. Would it really be that hard tof ford to make that thing accessible without tearing the whole car apart? And what are the odds you'll ever get everything back seated properly so that your dash doesn't bounce all over the place while drivng down the road. Oh, yeah, I forgot, it's a ford, so it shakes all over the place standard from the facory  .

Anyway, Kira (lurpsho) has removed the dash and everything. The piece of plastic won't move from it's position. It doesn't want to come out. So, if anyone has experience with removing this thing, then please let us know. Is there anything that you can't get to from the inside? If there a cable or clip that we can't see? Anyway, thanks for the help guys and gals. Laters!

did mine last year what a PITA.
Have you removed the retaining nuts from the firewall, you can access them from the engine compartment and dont forget to remove the lower retaining screws under the unit.

hope this helps.

Did you remove the retaining huts from the engine side of the firewall? As I recall, there are 3 or 4 of them the hold the heater box in, plus a couple more that look the same but are the wrong ones.
