Dam cv joint snaped on me and i towed the car home. After replacing it i cant help but notice all gears in their proper rows but i only have access to 2 gears top or bottom when driving but if i slam the shifter towards first i can get first/second then i have to repete to get fifth/reverse. Third/forth just wollows in there realy loose . Did i just toast my tranny? She still drives and im starting to figure out how to drive it like this but i want the dam thing right. Am i in for a tranny replacement? Clutch is about shot too...

If the clutch is shot, that might be the prblem right there. You may be jumping too soon; thinking that a cv axle would cause shifter issues.

Huh?

What gear were you in when the CV joint went? Did it just let go, or were you on it at the time? Any [new] transmission noise(s)?

Cable or rod shifter?

Recheck your work to make sure the shifter bolts are all tight (one may have backed-off).

Check the transmission case to make sure the transmission boss hasn't cracked/broken.

My first guess would be the linkage.

I would stop trying to slam it into gears it doesn't want to go into - you're likely to do more internal damage, even if none is [currently] present.

No first or second to be found, third/forth and fifth/reverse still there. The cv joint was going and it fell apart at the drivers side roter connection, cv joint was severed. I was in the middle of a 3 point turnaround, very low speed, low power turn. In any gear there is alot of shifter slop. Any help is greatly appretiated. Forgot to mention i beleave it is the stock 89 shifter.

you have a cable shifter if you havent upgraded it to a rod shifter then... What does it feel like then your shifting? Does it feel like its hitting somthing and wont go in but it does eventually? or is it just slow to move in? My guess is your top shift cable is loose. if you climb undeer the car with it in reverse (easier to see it) you will see a piece of what looks like angle iron with a steel ball and a white plastic socket on it. check if there is any play. let me know your results...

Definently sounds like a rod shifter stabilizer bolt backed out. But with a cable shifter... Hmmm Check that your shifter housing underneath is ok. Something doesnt add up, and has to be loose. Just check the linkage and assy.

Had this happen before, when I had the Cable setup. The shift gate selection cable got loose (this acts when the shifter is moved left-right).
Check at the tranny end- this is the vertical cable. If it is attached, check the cable sheath. It's possible the sheath is loose and it won't move the cable with enough force to select gates.

yeah, like i said before now i think im 95% right in saying that it is the upper cable that is either loose/falling off on the tranny end OR is loose in the housing... good luck and let us know what works...

BTW my upper cable fell of numerous times after hard 2-3 shifts. I have now fixed my problem by using 3 large zipties holding the socket on the ball on the tranny end... next fix is a rod shifter

-Mitch

P.S You dont want to have to replace an upper shift cable as it routs through the firewall and is a BITCH to take out/put in.

Apparently the up down shift cable "fell off". How this is posable i dont know but im very happy about it. Now im at a loss to understand how i got first/second in the first place.
