as the title says and i got it on a audio clip and i can give a detail description of where the recorder was with each time frame but the olny problem is where can i upload this sound clip so others can hear it?

from what i can tell it seems like its the water pump but i never heard of a water pump knocking.

at first i thought the rod bearings mights been knocking after i replaced them but when i used the recorder and i had it at the bottom of the engine i learned it wasent knocking on the bottom end but was up top near the belt side around the water pump, rear head area.

thanks anyone for a link where i can upload this clip and also further on any help on locating the problem...

i did the 3.2 atx to mtx swap and i used the whole 3.0 water pump and dont know the condition except it was perfectly fine in the 92 donor car i had.

Check your TQ on your crank bolt! Also try a search on crank cancer, there are a few vids out there with that noise in it. You can upload the clip to putfile.com

Water pumps do often knock. Remove the belt and spin the pump. How does it feel? Hows the play in the pulley?

Also, hows the timing chain on the rear (driver's side) of the engine? Often the noise can sound like it's coming from a place other than the timing chain.

And last, check not only the crank bolt, but the balancer itself. If the rubber element is seperating, it will often knock loudly.

thanks... i know my crank bolt is down to 130 - 140 ft lbs so there should be no problems with the bolt.
ill have to give it a try.

i think im gonna just remove the belt and start it up see how it sounds.

i know the timing chain made some noise before off the 3.0 heads but it was up front and it was ever so slight.

edit: also i just had this all off since i put new head gaskets on and did the rod bearings, the key and all was perfectly fine not ever rust down there. and since i noticed the sound isnt coming from anywhere under the car (its quiter under the car). i can count out any thing with the crank thank god.

i had the same problem and replaced both timing chains and tensioners, rod bearings, shim adjustment and it turned out 2 be the timing belt tensioner i used a stethascope to finally pinpoint the noise but i'm glad I replaced all that anyway because that's alot of maintience out of the way good luck

heres a link of the sound

http://media.putfile.com/knocking-sound

ok when the audio starts i was near the top middle like water pump area of the engine and then when its quiter its down below the engine at the bottom which is when you hear the exhaust get louder also.
yes i have an exhaust leak i know but thats the least of my worries.

hope this sound can better pin point before i start ripping apart..

i havent had a chance to get any work with the car yet been busy.
but im gonna take the belts off and run it for a few secs see if the sound goes away.
if not im gonna check the tentioners and shims. i was told the 60k on the heads was done not ever 20k miles ago but i dont know for sure this came from my donor car that was in new york...

but if you hear it is a awkward sound and at the end i rev it some and the sound dont really go away.

also when i put the recorder thingy near the rear of the heads where the tentioners are it didnt seem to be any louder just a bit quiter.

like i said i think either water pump or the front of the rear head.

Definately not a good sound. The only things I can imagine are loose timing belt or loose crank sprocket(cancer)

Sounds like the timing belt is loose and slapping the cover. Try retensioning the belt.

i think it has something to do with the belt too, id check out the tensioner too... maybe its the tensioner thats causing the belt to do that if it is the belt...
