I had the same problem. What I did was put a long pipe on the end of the ratchet to get leverage. Also I had another person in the car that put the car in gear and stepped on the brake so the motor did not turn. Or you can do what my friend did with his SHO, he wedged a wrench in place and cranked the motor once(I don't recommend doing it this way).

Place your ratchet or a breaker bar so it is leaning against the subframe with the socket on the crank nut (the wrench should be in about the 3:30-4:00 position to the right resting against the subframe).

If you haven't yet removed the intake, disconnect the DIS module (the grey module on the crossover tube) on both ends.

If you've already removed the battery, temporarily hook it back up.

Then all you have to do is turn the key to bump the starter for less than a second. It has enough torque to free that nut and VOILA! :)

yamaha sho, the starter method is completely safe and works everytime. Just make sure you use a "lifetime warantee" ratchet and an impact socket (19mm).

When I did my 60K I didn't even consider loosening the damper bolt with anything *but* the starter bump method. 1/4 second turn of the ignition key and the bolt's loose. Easiest part of the 60K and completely safe.

Use a 19mm impact socket on a 1/2" drive wrench and place the wrench handle as shown in the referenced picture here. Be sure to remove the DIS module plugs to prevent the engine from starting. Just bump the starter for a 1/2 second to break the bolt loose. You should be able to turn the bolt with your fingers after the starter pops it loose.

any suggestions on how to get it off with the motor out of the car? Tried wedging a screwdriver to stop the crank from turning, and cranked on it with/ a breaker bar with no luck. It was just bending the motor stand bolts/lifting up the stand. any ideas?

If the motor is already out of the car, the starter bump methond cannot be used.

I recall that the service manual shows a special tool that has a pawl that engages with the flywheel to keep the engine from turning. Maybe you can come up with something of that sort or some other arrangementbolted to the flywheel or that end of the crank if a strap wrench doesn't work.
