HELP!!! Bent shifter attachment???

Since my father in law drove my car last week, and had a **** of a time finding 1st and 3nd gear, my shifter has felt rather spongey. Then last night my wife went to the store and calls to say my clutch is slipping. When she gets home I go for a test drive. The shifter seems very loose and can't find 1st or 3rd gear. However, if I go under vehicle and manually shift trans it will go into gear w/no problem. HELP!!!

I don't even want to know what a "shiter attachment" is...

Cable-shift or rod-shift (<mid-91 stock?)?

OOPPSS typo!! :p I ment shiFter attachment. Where the shifter actually goes through the floor and and attaches to the the shifter linkage. Oh, and it's "92 and has a rod shifter. Thanks for and info.

I'd look under the car at the rods where they tie into the transaxle, personally. There are 2 rods - one controls forward movement as well as "twist" to choose the gate inside the transaxle, the other one stabilizes the shifter itself for the side-side gate movement.

There's a large bolt that fastens the stabilizer rod to the transaxle. Make sure that's not broken away or backed out.

Also check to make sure the small bolt that fastens the shifter rod to the shift-shaft on the transaxle is there & intact. It's a weird looking bolt / clamp / nut assembly that looks like Darth Vader's TIE fighter.

This one gets my vote of funniest typo of all time!
I doubt the linkage is bent I would check what Fred said first then you might have to dig into the shiFter itself and see if the bushing took a shift.
