Okay I did the search, now i want the experts own opinions in this thread.

I've been a member since almost the start and just now bought an 89 SHO for fun.

Anyways the car won't start squint .

I've narrowed it down to the DIS, I hope.

And I would ask you all to tell me exactly the steps for putting the new one on.

Here's how it is currently being planned.

1. Disconnect battery.
2. Unplug and remove old DIS.
3. Apply heat sinc, or other thing, to the back of new DIS.
4. Put dis back on.
5. Pull some high 14's in my beater wink

Questions.

I only have 3 screws, is this bad news?

If this doesn't work, whats the next step?

half-way there, I think.
Try to retrieve the codes. More often than not the CID aka CPS is the cause of a no start condition in SHOs.

I don't know about your install. I've only pulled the plugs off, not actually removed the module from the intake. That sounds about right, though..

But I do know if you unplug it your car will crank forever and NEVER start.

I have that "crossover tube" off right now so I decided to take off the DIS in order to clean up the mounting surfaces and screws. So, following some advice posted in this forum, I cleaned the surfaces with solvent and a rag and then used a fine wire brush on them. I followed up that with a little emmery cloth action and had two very nice metal surfaces upon which to spread a thin, uniform coat of heatsink grease that I recently picked up from an electroncis shop. I also wire brushed the screws before reattaching the DIS to the intake.

As I understand it, the connection between the DIS and the intake is critical, so I didn't want to leave anything to chance. :)

The DIS rarely goes bad. I second the CPS most likely (although not certainly) being the problem.

Make sure the ground strap on the passenger side rear corner of the intake is attached, along with the Crossover tube mounting bolts.

Any more info or detail on this? I have taken apart an old manifold for powder coating and noticed the white goo where the DIS is attached. Is there any particular brand of the "heat sink grease" that y'all recommend? shrug

I honestly have no clue which grease might be better than another grease when it comes to heat sinks. shrug The stuff I got from my local electronics store is that same thick, white ***** stuff. I just asked the store owner for the best stuff he had and he pointed me to a small $2.99 package of grease with a "NTE Electronics" label which actually consisted of 5 even smaller seperate "single use" packets (I did not use all of them, maybe 2-3).

Actually I've had a problem with the DIS, if you are missing a screw or the DIS is not on there all the way and TIGHT, the car will crank forever and not start. Try replacing the screw, tightening them all down, and see if it works before buying/doing any work! thumb

The previous owner told you it was the DIS? And you believe his diagnostics expertise? Check the codes or you may just be wasting time, money and effort for solving a problem that doesn't exist. Check the codes and let us know the results before spending any more time on this. Please.

Listen to the people that have " been there, done that, got the t-shrit and the tatoo". Get a replacment screw and run the codes. I missed a open track event last summer do to loose screws on my DIS. headbang the car quit on the way to the track and would not start. I thought it was the CPS.

you can always take the DIS off and take it to a local store that can run a test on it. I took mine to my local napa for them to test it.

Not having looked at the DIS in a while, how many screws are there supposed to be? The module is grounded by one of the screws and if one is missing I would replace that and see if it cures the problem. After that run the codes and blah blah blah...

Four screws in each corner of the DIS. And I don't believe the DIS is grounded by the screws.

I know that the problem was the DIS in this case as the old one was cracked :D

The car just cranks and cranks and cranks forever.

I did not know that the module had to be on there snug so I really didn't screw it on that tight :<...

Anyways I'm off to try it again :D

It is grounded by one or more of the screws, which one(s) I'm unsure of. Be careful to not over tighten it or you can crack the plastic, snug is just fine.

A friend of mine has his DIS mounted with spacers (tiny washers) on the screws so the DIS itself does not touch the crossover tube at all. His car runs just fine and he claims that it keeps the DIS cooler. I can't say if that actually is good or bad, but I do know his car runs just fine.
