My cable has been broken for a few months now and I've decided to fix it. What happend was one day I went to release my ebrake I pulled the lever and it snapped and the lever came off. I know have to release my ebreake with my foot to pop it up. Is there anyway to reattach the ebrake release lever? I looked but there is a slot for it but I can't find a way to get the cable throught the slot, any ideas?

Thanks Dan

the handle is actually held in with a clip very similar to a door lock clip behind the dashboard...if you undo the 4 bolts and the cover under the steering wheel and look behind the release lever you should be able to get your hand back there to remove the clip..on cars 90 and up if you take out the auto lamp/dimmer housing its right under it and very easy to get too...

Yeah, but you have to remove that clip to remove the plastic housing of the cable in order to install a new one. A new one can be had from any autostore, I'd assume, for like $13. I know motormite makes them and AutoZone and O'Reilly's carry replacements. 90-95 Taurus use the same, as 89 and older are the same.

Ok, been there done that. My wife pulled the lever out and handed me the cable. Funny at the time, not cool though.

Now to replace, You dont have to remove any bolts or anything as mentioned previously.

1: You cant buy just a new cable, you will have to go to a scrap yard and get the whole handle assembly (which is the cable, handle and cover). Dont worry its not expensive nor hard to remove. The assembly is not SHO specific, any same year taurus will do.

With a screw driver, Carefully pry out the headlight dimmer control cover. Look inside and you will see a little metal u-clip on the bottom that holds the ebrake pull lever assembly in place. Pop that clip out. The whole handle assembly will come out now as your cable is broken.

To get the junkyard assembly out you will do the same thing, only you will have to remove the cable from the little metal release lever. You can do this by moving the release lever back (like you are doing now with your foot) and slide the cable forward. The entire clip comes out and the assembly pops out just like your busted one did.

Enjoy.

mine is an 89 I don't have the headlight dimmer where yours is

Pull the fuse box downward and the clip is right there on the back of the dash. Being that it is used on all Taurus, they do happen to have them brand new, cable and housing together, maybe the parts store you went to just didn't carry it or look it up right, BTDT. A used cable isn't the best either, but if you do get one, get it off an automatic that hasn't been used as much as a manual.

86-89 have the same style dash
90-95 have the same style dash

A 90' cable will not work on an 89, it has a different dash.
