Has anyone identified this noise in an Ecoboost engine?

http://www.shoforum.com/index.php?t...-ideas-about-knock-clack.128080/#post-1454923

I have this same engine noise. Not sure what kind of car this is, But my 2010 MKS ECO makes the same knock.

I am nearing end of warranty, have had it in to the dealer, but they weren't able to recreate it when I had it there. Noise seems to go away after engine is warm.

Any ideas where I can point the tech's when I take it back this week?

Thanks!

Welcome to SHOforum! Please make a video for your MKS so we can hear the sounds for ourselves.

Be advised that there are some common sounds inherent to these GTDI (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engines and will sound almost like a diesel engine when idling, especially if the appearance cover is missing:
  1. Fuel injectors - regular clicking/clacking
  2. High Pressure Fuel Pump - very fast clicking - more audible with the insulator cover off
Sometimes you will hear a rattle for a couple of seconds when the engine is first started, believed to be the time when sufficient oil pressure has not yet been achieved. This noise can be substantially mitigated by using a quality oil filter like the Motorcraft FL500s, as recommended in the manual.

Much less often, you will hear a rattle that goes on for an extended period of time. That has been narrowed down to timing chain stretch due to inadequate lubrication. The timing system is highly dependent on the correct oil to work properly, along with timely oil and filter changes. Sometimes you can "fix" the issue by moving to a high quality full synthetic oil like Amsoil. Other times, the stretch in the timing chain is so bad, it HAS to be replaced.

One mans hearing is not necessarily anothers. Getting a sample from the object under consideration will give us a more complete picture, considering this is a virtual diagnostic, not an in person one. Always encourage submission of pics, videos, and audio clips to help get to the right diagnosis quickly. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum (not talking about myself at all), We should respect their time & effort. Thats all I am saying.

Thanks for the reply's guys, I will try and post a sound clip today...
I've been lurking here for quite some time, I appreciate all the info.

It's not the injectors. This is more a knock; non-synchronous and intermittent. It's not there on engine rev that I can tell, only at idle when the engine is
cold. No performance issues. I started getting worried when I read about bearings etc, in the bottom end of the motor. In my search on the site for the noise
I came across the clip above, which sounds exactly like my knock. As said, I will try and get a clip up.

Thanks again.

Try to record the sound when next to a wall some reason sounds are more isolated sounding this way or whatever way you can get the sound recorded

Sounds like piston slap.

Didn't the early EB3.5's exhibit some piston slap for the first year or two?

Some info on the F150 application:
  • Ford's EcoBoost piston design uses many new technologies previously found on some of their high performance race vehicles. This includes high-strength aluminum, CNC machined with thick ring-lands providing support across the piston and recessed below the piston top.
  • Piston top shape designed for efficient combustion with direct injector and controlled flame propagation across the cylinder.
  • Low friction coatings are used on the piston skirt to reduce wear and friction on the cylinder walls.
  • Piston cooling "oil squirter" jets spray oil on the underside of the piston to keep it cool and strong.
  • Ford's 10.0:1 Compression Ratio EcoBoost piston design uses High-Temperature Aluminum alloy combined with 2 steel cast-in upper ring supports. Previously found on high performance diesel engines, these steel supports are recessed below the piston top and act as the upper ringlands. They provide rigidity across the piston and allow the low tension rings to reliably handle long-term turbo boost.
  • "Direct-Injection Bowl" Piston top shape is designed for efficient combustion with direct injector and controlled flame propagation across the cylinder
