I have a 1992 SHO with 130K. A few weeks ago it suddently became difficult to start after sitting 3-5 hours. After about 15 sec. of cranking it would start with a big puff of smoke(smelled flooded). If the car sat less that 3 hours or more that 5 or 6 it seemed to start normally. IE always started fine first thing in the morning. Now it is always hard to start. if it sits more that three or 4 hours.

I have tried to turn the key on and let the fuel pump run for a few seconds to see if that helps. It doesn't. Also never touch the gas pedal while trying to start it. Any ideas guys.

This is my first posting but I have been lurking here for a few months. Any other SHO owners in KY?

Thanks,

Trent

Try cranking it with the throttle barely cracked open. This is to test for a dead spot in the throttle position sensor. If that is the case, it should start normally.

You can get a Wells TPS215 from AutoZone for $23.99. It only takes a Phillips screwdriver and a few minutes to replace the TPS. It is located on the forward side of the throttle body on the throttle shaft.

Is a deadspot when you hit the gas pedal, and it doesnt react instantly? theres a slight delay for when the rpms go up. Because thats what i experience. Its like i never have full throttle, but my throttle plate opens all the way, im pretty sure. It dont help that i need a another used throttle cable cause ford dont make them for the 92s and i go through used ones like underwear!

Hello Fellow Kentuckian!!

Sounds like it's your CPS (Cam Position Sensor). AutoZone has them (cheap I think), they can be difficult to change if your not use to working on a SHO ..
