Hi again guys...

Here is my problem. My engine seems to be making a metal on metal sound when it starts. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. If you have ever experienced a bad wheel bearing that is what it sounds like. Any help is appreciated. Gracias

it sounds to me like it is your starter. it sounds like your starter gear is sticking and running against the flywheel which makes a grinding sound. try spraying some wd40 behind the gear and see what that does. i had a couple fords which had that problem and that always took care of it for me.

I know that grinding sound and it's nothing like that. This sounds like a sticky brake caliper or a bad wheel bearing. I think I might be having some lubrication problems. frown

well, being a very BROAD area of possible problems... try adding some Lucas oil stabalizer thumbs_u . I had a "noisy initial start up" and this helped tremendously!

dk,

Did you by any chance see any reduction in oil usage, if you were using oil in the first place?

I'm thinking of trying a quart of the Lucas on my next oil change to see if it makes any difference in the 1 qt/1000 miles my tired old 89 uses. I've looked at a variety of sites on the internet and haven't really found anything that was critical of the Lucas products. Everythinge else like STP, Slick50 and a whole bunch of other additive products all have been extensively criticized for being ineffective or a waste of money, but Lucas ...nothing critical.

Just wondering.

well, I started using it RIGHT after my 60k a couple of months ago. I can't say for sure that it has reduced oil consumption... all I can say is that it has quietened down a lot of noise.
(I am speculating that now that my sho runs like a "scalded dog" (with the exhaust no longer having a lodged hairball from a broken up cat), my oil consumption and leakage will only worsen :(
I say go for it... I too have not heard ANY negative feedback on ANY Lucas products.

The noise is coming from the engine. You really can't pinpoint where. It just sounds like the whole engine. The doesn't use oil.

Stay away from the Lucas oil stabilizer or any oil additives for that matter. They basically thicken your oil and they only correct the symptoms, not the problems.

The problems are due to over 200K on the clock. The only thing that will fix them is an engine rebuild.

Hiding the symptoms for the last years of this car's life is enough for me.

Mikeys_Taurus, what brand and type of oil are you using in your car? There can be a great difference in the startup behavior between the different oils.

I've always use amsoil 5W 30. The motor doesn't consume any oil so I'm not worried about the thinner oil. Scott, help me please. And you can call me Mike. :)

Alright, merry Christmas...

This is the oil pressure just after starting.

This is vacuum at start-up.

This is oil pressure at idle on a warm engine. It's the bottom gauge. I'm sorry about the quality.

This is vacuum when warm.

If the armature on the starter motor was sticking out would it make this type of noise?
