Grinding noise -- wheel bearing or cv joint?

I searched this to death and couldn't determine what exactly the problem is here. Upon takeoff a grinding type noise from my front driver side wheel is present until about 15 mph...after that it's pretty quiet. This is the same exact noise you would hear on a bad cv joint with a busted boot and contaminated bearings. However, the rubber boot on my cv joint is NOT torn...can my cv joint STILL be bad? How do I determine is this is my cv joint and not a wheel bearing?

Searched to death, huh? Did you try the "Suspension, Brake Systems, & Body" topic? Have you checked the wheel bearings for play and wear? The CV joints can fail if the grease in the boots was an improper type, had not been applied sufficiently or has leaked out. The CV joints usually indicate their failure with a clicking noise during turns, not a grinding sound. Check those wheel bearings. Quickly!

Ditto what Scott said, ie wheel bearings AND hubs.

If your bearings are dry enough to growl, then they are getting hot while you are driving. This will distort the hub.

If you press a distorted hub into a new bearing you will be changing the bearing again very soon!

You can "mike" the hubs for distortion, but they are not that expensive. IMHO replace the hubs and bearings as a unit.

And, as you would do with an equasion, what you do to one side, do to the other!
