Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I get started. This morning I was driving the car a little hard rushing to work. When I got off the highway I noticed that there is an awful grinding noise coming from the tranny side of the car. It really only happens in 1st-4th gears and in reverse and in neutral it sounds like it goes completely away in 5th gear or at least it's a lot more quiet. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be?? I tried doing searches but couldn't find anything on that same issue. But I did find some post that were somewhat similar and they were saying the fluid could be low.

Thanks in advance for any help

sounds like a bad bearing. of course, no / low fluid makes that more likely.

depending on which shaft has the bad bearing will make it worse in some gears than others.

Do I have to pull the tranny to get to that bearing or is that the bearing where the axle is??

First check the fluid in your transmission.

Second, any bearing that's bad will require removal of the transmission to replace. If the fluid has been run low, you may have multiple bearings requiring replacement!

you would have to pull the trans to get to any of the bearings in it.
