Okay....so this is somewhat pirated off STS Turbo's idea, but what about a remote mount turbo?? There's plenty of room back there under the trunk to mount all the hardware, and one could easily slap a remote oil tank with pump either under the car or in the trunk.....

why hasn't this been addressed?

Anyone see any flaws here, aside from air filter location?

plenty of flaws with an STS-style set-up.

1. LAG

2. filter placement near ground and water

3. blow through MAF? if not you've gotta extand all of those wires.

4. Heat loss from the head to the turbo slows turbo response which will already be heinous.

5. intercooling? add some more to that lag and unresponsive feel.

6. oil supply issues

7. just going to run a wide 3" dump pipe from the turbo? gonna be loud!

to put it in perspective....imagine a standard turbo header...however place the turbo 6.5' away from the ******...then add another 6.5-8' of charge piping (without IC)...

With my limited turbo knowledge, I can't answer all of those, but as far as intercooling, there'd be no need....with the intake pipe running under the length of the car and getting plenty of fresh air hitting it, why intercool it more?

Oil supply....as I said...remote mount oil resevior.

Prolly won't be THAT loud.....look at a neon SRT-4....no mufflers, just cats.

Just some thoughts.....

1. LAG
Although in theory I agree, I've also talked to a guy with a Firebird that had a remote mount turbo and he seems pretty happy with it.

2. filter placement near ground and water

Most SC SHO's run their filters right next to the ground as is. I've sucked up plenty of water.

3. blow through MAF? if not you've gotta extand all of those wires.
Again, this is commonly used in the SHO. I've tried to run a pre-blower MAF and neither I, nor twr could tune out the rich under engine deceleration (and I'm pretty good with tuning these cars).

4. Heat loss from the head to the turbo slows turbo response which will already be heinous.
Agreed, but it works.

5. intercooling? add some more to that lag and unresponsive feel.
STS or remote mount turbo's do not need an intercooler. They have 8+ feet of pipe to cool down in.

6. oil supply issues
No real issue, either have a long feed and return line or a seperate oiling system as stated above.

7. just going to run a wide 3" dump pipe from the turbo? gonna be loud!
It's not as loud as you may think. I've heard a SC SHO with cats/resonator/two mufflers sound louder than and STS turbo Firebird.

I would not mind seeing this done with the SHO, however, it would not be my first choice. With all the work involved, it would be just as easy or easier to run a turbo like Tim T's.

the reason a 5.7L firebird has no probem spooling a STS turbo is because of their dispacement and the fact that the engine has more than enough power stock to get off the line decently and make up for the hideous lag times.

If Corky Bell were here he'd litteraly die. Everythign on an STS system defies what logic and physics tells us is ideal. It may work for a 5.7L firebird but throw it on a peaky 3.0L and it'll react much differently. I've seen one on a 1.8L Integra and it was junk. A local kid here has one and he gets dusted by everything on the road.

a 3.0L may be better than the 1.8L but it won't be that far off.

True, but is works in that application. I do agree it is not the way to go, but it WILL work.

Even a stock 1.8L Integra?

I did not say it was the way to go, I just went after some of the points you tried to make.

I did the search....the only thing I could find is posts about the TT probe and toolman's car....one post about the STS thing, and someone else said the same damn thing...go search.

*edit
Sorry.....y'all too fast for me.

It was just a thought....I wasn't sure if this particular horse had been beaten or not.

it seems people aren't exceedingly friendly here when you're asking for help. I tired to offer my opinions based on first hand experience with these STS systems. They work decently on bigger engines but are not worth it on smaller engines...ours is right inbetween. I think it's been proven more than that other systems will make more power with less work and risk. I'd just stick to that path.

p.s. the "do a search" response gets real old after awhile. I've done a few searches on here and not come up with any of the info I was looking for. I posted a new thread and was told "do a search" then someone came in and explained it to me and the issue was resolved. Seems better all around just to help someone out than to snap at them.

I never actually told anyone to do a search... read it again. Everytime I have referenced a search, I've been able to find what the people are looking for without problem.

The reason I referenced the search is because this topic was discussed in heated detail for many pages... It should be rather easy to find.

I'm not sure exactly what the extra risk would be with a remote system. What do you mean there?

mounting a turbo charger out of the engine bay where it will come in contatct with water, dirt, road salt, debris, etc....

ever take a hot piece of steel and spalsh cold water on it? Ever taken a hot exhaust manifold and hit it with a hose? It'll shatter (7 out of10 times)

I'm actually a big fan of turbos....just efficient ones.

In most cases, that's not going to be an issue. If it were, a little ingenuity with some sheet metal will fix that problem. You'd have to get a lot of COLD water on it... Most of it will evaporate very quickly. A remote mounted turbo won't be running quite as hot either.

Instead of mounting the turbo where STS does, why not mount it at the end of the y-pipe, or make a new catless pipe and you could still run a fairly stock style cat back. You would loose the cat, but you would still have mufflers, and would not lose as much heat as having the turbo under the trunk. The SHO heads have been said to flow more air than a 5.0. If that is true, a properly sized turbo may not have as much lag as some may think.

head flow rates are not as important as thwe amount of exhaust gas pulsed out from the extra 2 cylinders and greater displacement. Displacement is really what gets a turbo moving. The more displacement you have the more exhaust you'll have to spool the turbo.

I'm all for doing something different. I just want to make sur eyou know EXACTLY what you're getting into.

If the idea was so great everyone would do it. People started remote-mounting their turbos because they were too lazy to design a proper kit. I understand some vehicles are REAL cramped but i've seen twin turbo Mazda 6's with the 3.0L V6 and all it took was hard work from a skilled person.

SuperHO, good luck with whatever you choose to do.
