I've got some questions:
There is a slight "ticking" in idle with the hood up... you really can't hear it from inside the car(its pretty quiet)- Is this normal? Injectors? When a cam is going... how severe and what exactly is the noise?
2. Does the factory paint (black) have metallic specs in it?
3. It seems to shift really smooth. Yet I noticed when I pulled up my driveway (a SLIGHT incline), if I let off the brake and the gas, it would roll back without any hesitation...almost as if I was in neutral. Is this the sign of a problem?
4. What octane does the 3.4 desire?
5. How about oil type? 10w30?
6. Oh yeah. When I start it, there is an initial "ringing" sound? or something (only about a second). Is this normal? Dry start up perhaps?
I'll have more questions later. In the meantime I am going to search all the great info on th v8 sho!
I have 5 days to make sure I really want to keep it. I don't need a money pit RIGHT NOW. So any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks!

The ticking sounds like normal injectors if it was the cams its usually pretty loud from what I hear.

I would say the rolling backwards just means that it has a low idle as to not pull the car forward when in gear.

The 3.4 is supposed to get 91 or higher octane.

You are supposed to use 5w30 in the V8 SHO's all year round.

The other stuff I have no clue...hope that helps, someone else will chime in with better info.

After looking at the cam weld pics, I see they are very close to the timing chain tensioner. (I am suspecting that is the problem with my noisy mtx)
Does this make sense? The noise in the sound clip being the timing chain tensoner because the cams are failing?????

Well, for $8,000 that is close to top dollar for that car! See if you can go lower. I bought my 97 a year ago w/ 56k miles for 7,000 even from a stealer.

it's impossible for an ATX or MTX v6 to have a cam failure. The sprockets are bolted onto the cam, and the cam lobes are cast on, where on the V8 everything is pressed onto a hollow cam.

#3 Mine has done this since I got it (2 years ago). Sounds normal.

#4 Mine thrives on 87 octane.

#6 Mine has a rattle upon cold start up. I think a few others have the same rattle so nothing to worry about.

10w30 is good down to 0F which is good for your area. I run 5w30 Amsoil but am considering 0w40 Mobil 1. 0w30 Mobil one is better than 5w30 Mobil 1 viscosity wise at 100C. Little difference between 0w30 and 10w30 Mobil on at 100C.

If you want to use dyno oil you can't beat Mobil Drive Clean for price vs. performance.

does the V8 have secondaries like the v6 (opening up at 4k rpms)? I cant hear them if so. Is the sound as loud as the v6?
Also, at v8sho.com, (the opening page) the speed o guage has the gear shifter indicaor lit up (below the speedometer), "my" 97 does not have this. Is that normal?

Get rid of the stock air intake (saxacone) and get a cone...then you will know what secondaries sound like!

I believe that I heard the trans position indicator on the column only appeared in the 96's.
