Cheapest decent brake pad for your stock brake system would be Performance Friction carbon metallic. About $25 or so for a set at autozone. I have a set of Hawk HPS pads that I got for about $40 at tirerack. They are really pretty good considering how crappy the stock 10.2" brake system is. I don't have any direct comparison experience between the PF CM pads and the Hawk HPS. I would guess that the Hawks are a little better. The best pad (at a bit over $100 if you can still find them) would be the Carbotech Street F compound pad. It's the same stuff as Hawk HPS material (which Hawk doesn't sell to Carbotech any longer, hence why you would have to hunt down a new set of these pads) but Larry at Carbotech gives the pads some extra special treatment that improve the characteristics of the pad. He bakes them and then cryo treats them. The cryo treatment improves the pad material. If you never plan on replacing your stock brake system then those would be the pads to get. If you're eventually going to upgrade your brake hardware you might want to just do what I did and try out the Hawk HPS pads.

You might also talk to tirerack about their EBC greenstuff and redstuff pads.

My buddy is a autocross race nut and when we were discussing brake fade he said many times it can be your fluid. When the fluid is over temped it begins turning to gas and gas compresses. You might wanna try getting some high quality brake fluid with a high boiling point. Check redline fluid first. If you have problems finding it locally check www.shoshop.com. They have everything.Look there for pads also. If you do decide to change you fluid as well as your pads let me know what happens. I need to do the same but im waiting on my old pads to go first.

For the price and performance you can't beat the lifetime warranty of the performance friction pads at AZ. Couple that with a fresh bleeding with Ford Super Blue and you will be good to go.

Whatever you do dont use anything like the Raybestos QS type ceramic pads. If you do the slightest bit of Auto-X. They are great for the street though. THey never, ever make noise and are super low dust, but I have on several occasions pushed these pads beyond their limit and had them fade completely. Slotted roters will help this, but increase the dust tremendously. They good thing about these is that since they have a lifetime warranty, I just take them and get a new set if I get them super hot.
wink
Like I said before they are good for street use, but if you want some Auto-X performance, get Performance Friction pads.

I agree on the Raybestos QS. There a great street pad. I have them on my Yukon with slotted rotors but I have had them fade out on long mountain roads. Its scarry when you reach the bottom.
