I'm going to look at a 98 ES tomorrow, had a few questions since it's been awhile since I owned a SHO.

I ran a carfax, the guy says it has 110k miles, but its last reported mileage was at 111k in 2004. Now the car looks like it has only 100k on it (not much wear on the bolsters, almost no rust, dash isn't pulling away from the gauge cluster etc) but I'm a little confused. The guy said it must have been sitting for a long time when he got it. It's had 12 owners in 14 years so maybe...it had 60k on it in 2000, which seems like alot in the first 2 years.

the VIN in case anyone wants to look at it:
1FAFP54N8WA219953

I thought their was a Cam weld registry somewhere, the guy doesn't know much about the car so he couldn't tell me if they were welded, and I couldn't find a database on v8sho.com. I'm going to assume they aren't. He said he just had the alternator replaced (bleh!) and he thinks the A/C needs to be recharged. He told me for sure the compressor was ok (i heard it kick on a few times while looking at it tonight) but I'll see what its doing tomorrow when i drive it. I had my 99 for 160k miles and never refilled the A/C :/

So just a few questions I guess, is their a SHO cam weld registry somewhere I didn't see, and also is their anything I should look for transmission wise? I beat on mine and I had the torque converter fail at 100k and it was going out again at 160k, so I know how to tell when it bangs really hard into 2nd when it first starts up, but are their any other clues? Also the mileage, it really looks like it's 100k miles but the carfax lists it at slow intervals up to 111k in 2004, then nothing after that. What would I be looking at? Cam failure and it just sat for a long time or something else? I didn't check the odometer, he says it just barely has 110 but that sounds like somebody tampered with it - and I would assume that except for the condition of the car. He's also asking quite a bit less than I'd think it'd be worth. I figured it'd be around a 3000-3500 car (almost no rust, no significant body damage, everything seems to be working). Any thoughts?

3000-3500 for a car with "almost no" rust and dubious history? No thanks.

3000-3500 for a car without a dubious history. the only rust on it consists of a tiny patch about the size of a dime inside the rear drivers side wheel well. I'm just throwing that number out there, KBB says almost 4,000 for private party on it. The car is very clean, and finding a taurus or any car from the 90's in Iowa without rust is practically a miracle. I don't know if carfax screwed up the miles or if the guy is lieing or what, but if he hadn't told me the mileage on the car I would have said around 80-90k on it. It was in as good of condition as mine was at that mileage.....6-7 years ago.

If you are willing to travel some, there is a 76K, 99 Black SHO up in WA state. Can't post a craiglist ad so you will need to look for it (and I do not have any personal interest in this car). But it looks like a great deal.

My sister used to live in Chehalis and my cousin lives in Seattle.....but eh, that's a 2000 mile drive one way...that's like $300 bucks in gas plus the plane ticket to get there, I don't think it'd be a great deal by the time I got back home lol.

I was really just looking for input on the odometer issue and to find out if their is a cam weld directory anywhere. Its a nebraska car but I think the nearest two places to do a cam weld are Chicago and St Louis.

Oh and FYI, I said he's asking a lot less than I figured it'd be worth. I figured 3000-3500 with the condition its in, he is asking considerably less than that. That's why I'm asking these questions.

Gotcha. Mileage could have been reported wrong, or entered wrong at the DMV at some point. Still have the correct cluster for the year? That could've been swapped at some point too.

Yeah it looked like the 96-98s. The first reporting on it was 60k in 2000, which I guess if it's owned by a businessman isn't bad, but then it was up for auto auction in 2001 with 75k on it, and then it slowly went up to 110k in 2004 after that. It's got aftermarket wheels and some performance tires on it, I didn't pop the hood but I could tell it was factory exhaust and intake. Didn't look like the rear was sagging..yet. Clean title, one accident reported in 2004 (could also be why it was sitting). Nothing reported since then.

Theirs a 93 Mark VIII (also black) for sale with 4.10 gears, aluminum driveshaft, x pipe, tune, and some other stuff. 210k miles on it but engine and transmission were replaced at 100k, and the air ride was just replaced last year. The body and paint both look clean, I might take a look at that. Their are 4 Mustangs (69 with a 347, 84 LX 5.0, 86 GT 5.0, and an 87 2.3) parked next to my car in the parking lot so I'm kinda wanting a V8 again. Maybe sell the Volvo and get both cars :/

Personally I would walk, maybe run from that car.

Too many owners. Odometer is suspect.

I think you can do better.

Its clean, seems to run pretty well, and he's not asking that much. With the shape its in and the really weird carfax I'm more skeptical of the report than the car itself. The way the mileage is reported just seems weird, and it says an estimated 12 owners but the registration events don't really match that, also the mileage wasn't reported at any registration since 2004.

transmission seemed to be on its way out, kinda a hard bang into 2nd gear when i first started driving it, and a bit of a shudder when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.
