I saw this item on ebay where the radio was modified to fit Gen1 amp: http://www.ebay.com/itm/140680946526

I am interested but is this really possible? I like the looks of the Gen2 better and look like it is a complete setup so I might give it a shot. I think I have a premium sound amp, but my speaker grills say JBL. Would this work with JBL in case I am wrong?

Thanks

It's a simple change. The only reason the 2nd gen radios don't work on the 1st gen amps is the amp turn on feed. On the 1st gens it's 12 volts and on the 2nd gens it's 5 volts. There is no need to pay extra for one that is modified though since all you really need to do is swap in the 2nd gen amp and that will fix all the compatibility problems. You will also need to modify the radio mounting bezel or swap in a 2nd gen one.

Cool! Nice explanation. At the current price it is still cheaper than buying/finding gen2 amp. Any difference in sound with Gen2 amp? Thanks!
