Any way to make it work? I bought the car (91) without the headunit and cdplayer. I recently purchased a gen 2 headunit and cd player. I tried installing the cdplayer and headunit, but I got no sound. I know i hooked the headunit and cdplayer correctly. I had all the right jumpers and the "y" power cable. Everything lights up, all the bells and whistles, just no sound. I guess its not working because of the generation differences? Is it possible to make this combo work? I hope so or I am out a couple bucks. Is there anyone else who has made this work? :)

The 2nd gen head units amp turn on lead is only 5 volts and the 1st gen head units amp turn on lead is 12 volts. The amp is looking for a 12 volt signal and the 5 volts from the 2nd gen headunit won't do it. You can do a few different things:

1) Put a switch on the amp turn on lead wired to a 12 volt source and turn it on when you turn on the radio.

2) Put a relay that is triggered by the 5 volt amp turn on from the head unit that switch the required 12 volts for the amp.

3) Get a 2nd gen amp and plug it in. That's what I did.

Could I use the auxilliary power supply plug to source the 12V? Which color wire from the headunit harness controls amp power turnon? Which is to say, which color wire do I have to have 12 available to? I think i am going to run a switch in line...not perhaps the nicest looking solution, but I think i will get used to it.
