Gen I Spoiler

Well, with all the other work I've done this year on the car, when the spoiler started feeling like it was coming loose, I took it off the car.

It's just one piece of plastic, with the mounts glued on. They are just bolts on a fairly long tower.

One of the mounts was coming loose, so I glued it on with some liquid weld. While waiting for it to dry I was driving around with no spoiler and some electrical tape covering the holes in the trunk.

I'm amazed at what a cosmetic difference it makes on the car! Without the spoiler it looked like my rear bumper sticks out around 20ft. or so. I kind of liked the clean look up top, but I definitely felt better once I bolted it back on.

ps- Liquid weld is good stuff! I broke the stud on my NEW starter solenoid when I cranked on the bolts too much. I just glued it back together w/ some LW...

Ive been looking for something to get my spoiler reinforced on.

After I lost my first spoiler (read the thread about car washes ... squint ) I re-enforced the bracket clamps on the replacement spoiler with a 2 part epoxy.

I used 3M double sided tape on my spoiler. It worked all summer and now it is flapping again at the edges. Are there screws holding this thing on? Can I tighten them so I can stop using the tape?

Also my black rubber strip thing is starting to flap as well. What is that for? It resembles a gasket or moulding around a window...but it appears to be useless.

This is my take on it....

The black strip is much like a gasket, it seals the surface between the spoiler and deck lid. Without it debris can accumulate between the two surfaces, the friction caused by the debris can rub through the paint. This can lead to rust and wear marks on the deck lid hidden from sight.

my dads 56 Dodge has "gaskets" between the fender and headlight bezel, for the same reason.

Yes, the Plus Spoiler I purchase came with the plastic gasket glued with a factory adhiesive to keep it attached to the spoiler. I would suggest you remove your spoiler, peel off the rubber gasket, clean the surfaces, reattach it with 3M adhiesive possible weatherstrip adhiesive. Then bolt your spoiler back on, should be good for another 10-12 years.

My original problem was the brand new Energizer the AAFES (Army & Air Force Exchange Service) garage put in. They had to replace it and I was fine.

Until Monday night, with a million other things to worry about, my original died. Changed it in 2 hours Tuesday.

I mean reattach the gasket to the spoiler with a 3M adhiesive before bolting the spoiler back onto your deck lid. I wouldn't advise using tape its not strong enough for the long term.
Can't help you on the flapping, if its reinstalled correctly there shouldn't be any material coming loose from under the spoiler.

when you use the tape did you remove any previous adhesives. do that and/ or clean the area with some isopropl alcohol. and to my understanding (compliments of hci magazine) there is a bonding agent that is used (probably) sold separately) along with the 3m tape.
