Gen I Cold Air Intake

Hello all,

Just wanted to put a CAI in my Gen I shogun but I am having a hard time finding one and or a DIY as there are not too many companies that still design and or make CAI for Gen I's.

Is it worth putting a CAI?

I have seen one on a 90 sho and it was just in the engine bay, would it be more effective to have it run down into the wheel well? Like a Honda Accord style?

Does anyone have a link for a CAI that fits on a Gen I? And or a thread for a DIY.?

Any suggestions or directions are much appreciated.

No one has sold a CAI to the fender specifically for the SHO for a very long time. The old SHO Shop Can is the only one that comes to mind. You can look for a used one or post in the wanted to buy section on the forum and the facebook group to see if one is out there that someone is willing to part with. Otherwise you can modify an existing one or fab one from parts. I wouldn't use one for a naturally aspirated motor but I am not as concerned with aesthetics.

The factory air box is already a Cold Air Intake. A pretty good one too. Anything done to remove that is purely for looks in my opinion. That being said, this is what I made for my 91+. Its just some 3.5" tubing with silicone couplers. I've modified it a little more since I took this photo but the idea is still the same. I can post an updated photo later today. If you decide to go this route let me know and I can post the K&N filter # that you will need. I have it saved in my phone. There was someone selling a SHO Shop fender mount in the classified section. You might poke in there to see if its still available.

Now does that ****** bolt up to the inside body well? Or does it fit snug and is held there form the ridged CAI tubing. I like it I just want things to work,fit right and look semi good lol

I think I will be going this route as I just scored some spare CAI tubing from my uncle. I'm gonna do some measurements and some brainstorming then pull the trigger.

Maybe if you could let me know the route you took and how you mapped it out filter tuber size pics etc... that would help me pinpoint and execute.

K&N #RC-3180
3" silicone elbow from TB to MAF
3.5" silicone coupler from MAF to pipe.
3.5" pipe to mount filter.

The elbow length and angle will depend on the angle pipe you use. You better have solid motor mounts to do it my way or you'll risk popping a hose off. If you don't have solid motor mounts then you'll want a 3.5" **** hose from the MAF to pipe. That will give you some play. My IAT sensor is mounted in the underside of the elbow right before the TB.

And the paint job looks great.

That's also another thing I am working on is spit shining the whole engine compartment.

I think I'm going to try and spackle paint my pipes with some hi heat textured black paint.
My CAI in my 95 Impala SS is like that and it looks pretty good.

Question. So have the CAI do you notice a big dirfference in performance? Sound? I mean I know there is not much a difference is thought I'd ask your opinion in what you think of it once you installed it and gave er a rip.

Best thing to do is leave the stock airbox in place and gut the outer airbox. Remove the silencer cone and outer airbox from the drivers side fender. Very easy takes 10 minutes. You can also remove the screen in front of the MAF. Also a good time to clean the MAF while you are in there.

You could get creative if you want the look of a CAI but the functionality of the stock system (Ie, no hot air), check out what I did with some sheet metal and a spectere cone.
