I dont understand why this is so hard for people to wrap their mind around!

Its that simple

Look how dumb this looks
We have...

Gen1 SHO
Gen2 SHO
Gen3 SHO
Gen6 SHO WTF ?!?!?

Talk about confusing people....

If it hasn't been said already, we all drive Ford Taurus SHO's. They aren't Ford SHO's. So therefore, in my opinion, it makes more sense to refer to the new car as a 6th gen Ford Taurus SHO. When I refer to my car, it's a gen 2 Ford Taurus SHO, not a gen2 SHO.

...but doesn't Ford call it the 1st generation Taurus SHO (89-95)? :)

Shoot me, I'm not agreeing with someone! :) I vote we rename this the "www.taurusforum.com"!

To call it a "6th Generation SHO" is to have people infer that there are 5 preceding SHO generations, and that is incorrect and misleading.

To call it a "6th Generation Ford Taurus SHO" is arguably correct if you focus only on the Taurus name and trim line, but it is still misleading.

I vote 4th Generation SHO.

P.S. I don't believe there are many of us who've ever really felt that the SHO is "merely" a Taurus trim line, in any case. ;)

I understand some people think 86-95 = g1, 96-07 = g2, 08-09 = g3, and 10+ = g4 for taurii all togeather

You can't possibly classify 86-95 as the same generation? And 96-07?

I could not have said it any better myself.

don't the RS and M guys call theirs like they are a seperate vehicle? So the 00ish RS4's are Gen 1, and the 06+ are Gen 2, even though they dont correspond with the A4s? I'd think the SHO would be in a similar predicament, I say Gen 4.

Lets say I have a 1996 SHO and I need brake pads. I go to the local auto zone and say I need brake pads for a 1996 Taurus. THEY WILL GIVE ME THE WRONG PART.

Are Trim Lines

SHO = Different model with different parts and different repair manuals.

More parts are common with the regular Taurus than are different, and they don't have their own manuals, only a supplemental manual.

When the NHTSA rated the Taurus, they didn't rate the SHO separately; therefore, Ford and the Government consider the SHO a trim level and not a separate car from the regular Taurus.

BTW, when I order brake pads for my gen 3 I ask for 2001-2007 Taurus pads, because they have the exact same front brakes. I always get the proper pads that way.

Personally, I say scrap the whole "Generation" naming convention and that solves the problem. I think it's dumb. Especially since what we call a generation and what Ford calls a generation don't even match.

I call the V6 cars "the V6 cars". When necessary, I'll refine with year or tranny as the situation requires.

I call the V8 cars "the V8 cars". Again, when necessary, I'll refine with the year.

For now, I'm calling the Eco Boost cars "the Eco SHO".

Alternatively, maybe it would be better and help maintain harmony in the community to refer to the cars by platform designation, which is far more common amongst car enthusiasts:

  • '89-'95 models would be "the DN5 SHO"
  • '96-'99 models would be "the DN101 SHO"
  • 2010+ models would be "the D3 SHO".
Of course the "one off" cars could keep their "special" designations, so the '96 MTX Ryan built would stay the "DN102 SHO" and James' 2002 could be the "D186 SHO".

EDIT: FWIW for the purposes of humor, I came up with another "Gen" idea today: "Gen 6v4" :nut:

"Generations" have ALWAYS been MODEL (BODY) line distinguishments, NOT TRIM line identifications.

For instance, a 5th gen GRAND PRIX GTP is not a 1st gen GTP, its the MODEL of the car, not trim line, thats the way its always been for ALL vehicles.

Most you guys are just afraid to admit you own a TAURUS

everyone is refering to it as a SHO

its a TAURUS SHO

If there was no G4/G5/G6 Taurus, There would be no G6 SHO, It would of never been made, due to there beign no G6 Taurus. Do you think ford is going to go "Oh, lets make a 2010 SHO! Yeah!, Theres no 2010 Taurus tho!"

Are you referring to Audis here? If so, then you are incorrect. The first Audi A4's were produced from 1994-2001. The S4 of that era was produced from 1997-2002. The RS4's during that era were produced from 2000-2001. Despite staggered model years and different engine options, all of these cars are considered B5 platform cars and that's how Audi enthusiasts refer to them.

The BMW guys also refer to their cars based on the E platform designation. (E36, E46 etc) Your example actually gives more weight to calling this new SHO the gen 6 Taurus SHO then a gen 4.

There seem to be two camps here - those who refer to the SHO as a Ford SHO and who want to call the new car a Gen 4 SHO. This makes sense if you take into account that there was not already a gen 4 or 5 SHO. However, those of us who refer to it as a Ford Taurus SHO, are acknowledging that the car is still a Taurus and by Taurus enthusiasts' standards, there already was a gen 4 and gen 5 Taurus. To me, it's a bizarre thing to argue about, considering that the new ecoSHO shares more in common with the base 2010 Taurus then any of the previous SHO's did; i.e. the same engine!

Personally, I'm with Chris on this one. In my mind it'll be a gen 6 but I think I'm just going to refer to them by platform or engine designations from now on. Jason is correct; Ford does refer to 86-95 as a gen 1 but as Ron Porter pointed out on the V6 list, we didn't know that the gen 3 was a gen 2 until 1996. I think the generation naming is no longer useful with this car.

its a Gen 6 taurus.

FWIW it will prolly never be tagged a Generation

if anything ive heard more people refer to it as the ECOSHO. *shrug*

James' car to me is a gen 4 sho. dosent matter if ford did it or not. its still all the SHO amenities of the 3rd gen, but in a 4th. thus a 4th gen sho.

ill call it the ECOSHO when i refer to it. reguardless what you guys decide on.

You guys can call it whatever you want, I'll be calling it a Gen 4 & the forum labeling will continue to show it as a Generation 4 (2010). ;)
