The Gen III upgrade is more common on these cars since the brakes are larger. I have a 90, and the previous owner upgraded the brakes to 96. It stops great.

Not sure about going from Gen I to Gen II brakes. I didn't think they were that much different.

The Gen III brakes have a certain number stamped on the calipers but I forgot what it is.

You could measure the brake rotor. If its 11.6, then its got the '96 brakes.

He may be referring to one of two upgrades:

  • upgrading to the 94-95 Gen II front spindles, which allows running either the 94-95 calipers, and rotors, or the 96 brake upgrade (Gen III SHO 11.6" brakes).

  • upgrading to 93+ rear rotors from a Gen II/III/IV

Gen II [94-95] will have either DN5 or DN101 (DN5 most likely)

Gen III [non-SHO] will have either DN5 or DN101 (DN101 most likely)

Gen III [SHO-only] will have FN74

Gen IV [ALL] will have FN74
