I am looking at buying a 93. Price is very right and I need to know if their are any issues I should be aware of? I had a friend that had an 89 and everytime it needed repair it was expensive, are they still this way? From what I can tell parts are above average in cost but didn't know if there are a lot of things involved with maintenance. The car has 117k on it and the timing belts were done @ 90k. Owner said it was daily driver then sat for a few weeks and now it is hard starting. Any idea what this might be? I am mechanically inclined to a point, I don't want to spend a ton of time under the car because I am planning on using it for a daily driver so I can park my gas guzzling truck. Quick response would be appreciated since the car is on Ebay and the auction ends soon.

I'm going to be honest with you, I'm not sure that a '93 SHO is the kind of daily driver you are looking for. Generally speaking, it is a little bit higher maintenance than your average DD, some of the parts are getting a little harder to find, and if you don't have the tme or resources to work on it yourself, at least to some degree, then it's going to cost you a bundle in labor if something does break down. And there are no guarantees that any of your local mechanics are going to be familar with the Yamaha engine or the rest of the SHO drivetrain.

Granted, I own my SHO mostly for kicks, it's not my DD, so that is the perspective that I have. Others may view their SHO differently.

Thanks. My current DD is a 2001 Supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4 and gas is getting plain ridiculous so I was looking to an alternative that could become a "project" car down the road. I am also considering fox mustangs, turbo coupes, and xr4ti. For the money, ease of maintenence, and cheap parts I may go mustang. The 93 SHO went for under a grand and I thought for that price I would be willing to try but I hadn't had any answers so I let it go. I may still keep an eye out because it seems most of you have a very thorough knowledge of these cars and might keep trial and error repairs at a minimum. Thanks for your input, it is just what I needed.

Well now, if you are looking for something more along the lines of a fun "second" car, and don't mind sticking your head under the hood (and under the chassis ;)), then I would highly recommend a SHO. :D You are right, you can get help with pretty much every aspect of SHO maintenance and modifications around here.

My previous comments were with respect to the SHO being a prospective "drive it and forget it" type of daily driver.

I dont think a SHO is really for a daily driver.... Id suggest a slow car which equals good gas mileage. Toyota and Honda make cars(all their cars)for gas mileage.

I use my '95 as a daily driver, there's nothing wrong with doing that, but the cars are still high maintenance, and parts only get more expensive.

I'd say the only thing that would **** that deal for me is if the car is an automatic. the automatic trannies in the '93s are the weakest and the '94-95 trannies are only mildly better to my understanding.

If it's a stick, be sure you don't perform any smokey burnouts are romp on it too hard until you get a quaife differential in it. the Diff pins in the manuals are the weakpoint in the MTXs but the Quaife elimintes it and make the tranny pretty much bulletproof until you start getting some serious power mods into it like supercharging etc.

Basically, if I were you, I'd go let this car pass, and research all the faults of all the SHOs through this board's (and other's) archives. Once you know all the facts, then you can make a better and more educated decision.

You'll find 99% of us in here love these cars, but there's more than a handful of people like me who only wish we knew the details and of what we were getting into before we actually purchased the car. I probably would have bought the car anyway, but It would have been nice to know exactly what I was getting into. =)

Good luck whatever you do... :thumb:

PS... keep in mind our gas mileage goes down in a hurry with aggressive driving. Once the intake opens up (which is addicting) you can figure about 10 mpg less... possibly more.
