Do you know the maintenance history of the car. What is the tach doing? Before swapping out the tach, I would look into finding out why the engine has a miss and fixing the oil leak, etc. That may solve your tach issues. Have you already pulled your codes?

This^^^. Do you have any problems with it starting? My cam sensor was bad so it wouldn't start sometimes. When it did half the time the tach wouldn't work. Might be a problem with your DIS module too.

The car was in NE Washington State it's whole life. Garaged and well taken care of. I bought the 89 SHO in March 2018 and drove it to Portland, OR and it ran fine. Got it to Utah and ran pretty well but a slight miss when going through the gears.

The CODES have not been pulled.

The TACH, since I got it, reads weird.
- Stays below 1000 RPM most of the time.
- But when it is revved up the tach then goes up, but too high, like 8000 rpm when in reality about 5000.
- Thought the tach must be bad but after reading several posts,
- I don't know what to think.

The ENGINE MISS is a question, too.
- Ordered from Rock-Auto new plugs and wires
- Paid my mechanic to install the new plugs
- He said the new plug wires were wrong ones, so no new wires
- No improvement
- Low RPM will backfire on a load

The OIL LEAK under the engine
- Not looked at that
- Have a lift

Could the Cam Shaft Sensor (CID or PIP) be dirty, oiled up, or faulty maybe?
- Would that cause the miss?
- Would it cause the TACH to read weird?

Eastern Washington car, should be no rust so easier to work on. Start by pulling codes (you should have two digit codes), and that should tell you what sensor may be bad or where to start looking to resolve your issues. If you don't have a OBD 1 code reader, you can use a paperclip per the instructions below. I previously had a Gen 2 car with a miss between 1500 to 2500 RPM, and a set of new wires got the car running again. Did the mechanic say if there was any oil in the plug wells?

I found the omnispark wires from oreilleys work fine. A tad long but ok. Around $50 iirc. And like toolman said, we need pics!
