The access into the tank, the "pickup assembly", is sealed to the tank with a large o-ring.

So many of these cars need fuel pumps.

The assembly is prone to leaking sliglhty. especially with a fulltank, if it isn't installed back into the tank just right.

Since it is directly under the rear seat it tends to leak gas smell into the cabin.

It's your vapor canister. Follow the hose from the top of your intake manifold to the drivers side of the radiator (underneath). There you will find your problem. It's a cheap fix.

My money is not on the canister, but on the purge solenoid. Mine went bad, and caused the fuel smell inside the cabin problems. New solenoid, and I was good to go.

A number of the possible causes are listed above.

"Where" outside the car can you smell gas? Underhood? While pumping gas? While in the trunk?

Any recent underhood or underbody maintenance on the vehicle?

The more descriptive, the better . . . . :thumb:

The smell is on the outside of the car, and does it anytime it wants to.

Use your nose to follow the source of the smell. Fuel lines can spring a pinhole leak, they're under pressure so you can have a lot of gas leaking out. This could lead to an engine fire, so don't take this smell lightly!

I am too lazy to follow the above link....

In my old 93, I too had the fuel smell from the car. It was the purge solenoid had failed. Caused the canister to be saturated with fuel.

I eliminated the solenoid from the car. Just connected the two hose ends. After 3 or 4 days, the canister dried up, and the smell went away.
